Canon Rumors is announcing both...

I am all for updated WA primes but why the IS for this focal range???

Ahhh! My guess: By adding IS they can justify bumping the price by $500. I bet these primes will sell for around $800 each.

they're listed as both being f2.8....i can't imagine them selling for above $400...if you were going to spend $800 you could just get the 17-55f2.8 IS instead...i don't get them not being faster than f2.8...

Yea I'm also completely confused by the 2.8. Why even bother getting them with the so many zoom options in that range?

Well, the 17-55IS option DOES cost more listed new.

However, remember that in canon land, only the most cropped dSLR sensors get to use the 17-55IS.

As for their apertures. I say the same about the new 70-200. F2.5 wouldn't have been THAT outrageous.

But for the feature set of IS and USM, I am not betting they are cheap.

If these are only f2.8, they aren't going to get anyone to buy them if they cost more than $300-400.

I find these confusing too.... maybe they are targeted at people shooting video. As f2.8 lenses, they should be fairly compact,(but it looks as if they are both 58mm filter size, so appear to be about the same size as or a little smaller than the current 28/1.8 USM). Other than those reasons (video? compact?), I just don't see any reason for them. Maybe Canon will explain when they do press releases.

Most likely I'll keep using my 28/1.8 and wishing there was a modern version of the old FD "New" 24mm f/2.0. I would have really welcomed a USM EF version of that lens! It would probably be too close to the 24/1.4L, though, for Canon to consider offering one.

It's odd to see an ultrasonic lens without a gold stripe, too.

One other thought, I think Canon was taking a hard look at creating an EVIL (mirrorless) camera.... As a registered user and CPS member I got a survey from them about EVILs, probably about 5 or 6 months ago. I know quite a few other folks here mentioned getting that survey, too. Maybe rather than establishing a distinct mounting system for that they are looking at more compact primes in the EF mount that can be used on both EVIL and the DSLR line. I've often thought that there might be a market for a more pro-oriented Rebel/xxxD series, too (similar to what the 7D is for the xxD line)... perhaps instead of an EVIL.... or it might actually be an EVIL.

Canon talked a long while ago about updating all the older primes, especially those without USM (which would include the current f/2.8 28mm and 24mm). I guess this is the next step in that direction. The inclusion of IS may be a recognition that Nikon is now adding it to wider zooms, plus there are always people who would like to be able to handhold longer exposures, even at the wider end - I've heard it discussed in here before.

As for who would buy them, well I guess it's the same ones who would buy the current models, plus those who had wished they were updated.

I'm interested. If the weight and price is right, the 24 could be the one for me.

I really hope that 2.8 thing is wrong. Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 HSM OS can be had for $600-700. I can only think of one application: video on FF.

It all comes down to what the price will be, but I guess having IS is better than not...?

You have to understand, those primes are heavy! Nearly impossible to hold steady, they desperately need IS.

As they're 2.8, they probably won't be over $400-500 but I'd still prefer a 1.4/1.8/2.0 :(.

Great news. The 24 is intriguing to me now that I have a 5D II. And judging my 24-105 at 24mm, that lens may get sold for one of these, lol.
