The second death in a month in Vang Vieng Laos, and anorher Australian.

Tourists (mainly young people) flock to Vang Vieng in the mountains of northern Laos for a bit of adventure. Vang Vieng is getting the reputation as a party town where cheap booze, dope and women are readily available. A very popular activity is tubing down the Nam Song.

Medical facilities are less than adequate, medical facilities are three hours away in Vientiane.

If you come to Laos, please avoid Vang Vieng,,,it's the armpit of Laos. You have been warned!

Well, drinking and more in water is dangerous. Sounds like what Mexico used to be like. Well, before the resorts got organized, and before the local turf wars.

Sam,, It's very tragic when young people die in the pursuit of adventure. I used to do crazy things too,, but not in a developing country.

Vang Vieng is amoungst some of the most beautiful scenic countryside in Laos, but people don't realise the dangers especially if booze or dope fueled.

Yes, it is a tradjedy.

I remember when i was young that in Mexico they had bad rigging on the parachutes they towed behind speedboats, poor scuba equipment, people with guns on the beach. Kids had access to anything, and used to die climbing up buildings on a dare, for example.

It is good you posted a warning somewhere it could be found by people doing a search about that place before going.

The youth just thinks that old folk is "super boring", and NEVER give a 'sh*t' about it.

We are seeing far too many youth killed on our road every single day.

Heart aching for the family...

What a wast of life...

I thought it was a murder or something.

This was just someone being an idiot.

So perhaps warn idiots to stay away?

Warnings have been going out for quite a few years about the dangers of risky behaviour in Vang Vieng. Idiots are attracted to Vang Vieng because of cheap booze ( a 640ml bottle of Beerlao is around a dollar these days) and adventure. Add youthful stupidity and less than adequate medical facilities in to the mix and you have a recipe for disaster.

From what I read, 22 deaths last year in Vang Vieng,, mostly foreigners.

This one's a bit of a mystery. This happened in a remote area of Laos, a place called Muang Ngoi. Muang Ngoi is becoming a bit of an attraction for ecotourism. Trekking, ethnic villages and stuff like this.

The rumour or theory (details are sketchy), not many details have been released, it was a drug overdose. Probably yaba, (ya Lao for medicine, ba Lao for crazy) a methamphetamine cocktail or even opium.

I'd like to know how they died. Going back to Laos again, up around there, rather soon.

Vang Vieng is a horrible town, though, in a magnificently beautiful place. What ever you do, find a quiet guest house and spend most of your time in the countryside.

Vang Vieng is sadly a village full of drunk idiot foreigners that give the whole of Laos a bad vibe. The place is the dump hole in all of South East Asia. The village is basically ruined. Bars, guesthouses, and loud music all night long. The police there are very corrupt too and will do anything to make a dollar off of you.

However, the area surrounding VV is stunning and relatively few people actually go out and explore it all. I've been there twice, the second time strictly exploring the surrounding areas and checking out the nearby villages and it's very impressive. You can walk 2 km from VV and still not see another foreigner all day :)

I live on a bicycle, sleep in a tent, eat pasta and work in the oil and gas industry, and shoot photography because I'm bad at it.

That entire region of northern Laos north of Nam Ngum is absolutely stunning. The Vang Vieng area is typical of that region. If anyone has seen Air America, the region is typical of the vistas of the movie.

Vang Vieng is the armpit of Laos, not the geography, but the idiots who go there. I have spoken to many of these types. They come to Vientiane and within a day or so (often only hours) are on a bus to Vang VIeng. They ignore other areas of Laos in favour of adventure fueled by drunkenness. The locals are making a motza.

Another near death this week.

What is the reason for the warning?

"WARNING: MORONS GETTING THEMSELVES KILLED!"

So who cares?
