They always seem to release fairly comparable products so it's exciting to think what may be in store with the 5DIII / 5DX based on the D800 specs.

The 5D2 and D700 weren't really comparable cameras - more that they had a symbiotic relationship, with each covering the other's weaknesses. The 5D2 was a megapixel monster (for its time) - a fantastic sensor stuffed into not much of a camera. The D700 was a fantastic camera, but without the resolution or video.
