Whoa!

So it should be around $2999?

Where did you get $2,999? Everything so far seems to point at just under $4,000.

I know it has been mentioned elsewhere on the boards how Canon and Nikon are always pretty well aware of what the other is doing. They always seem to release fairly comparable products so it's exciting to think what may be in store with the 5DIII / 5DX based on the D800 specs.

I was just guessing on the price since the D700 started at $2999 ( I think? ??? )

The 5D2 and D700 weren't really comparable cameras - more that they had a symbiotic relationship, with each covering the other's weaknesses. The 5D2 was a megapixel monster (for its time) - a fantastic sensor stuffed into not much of a camera. The D700 was a fantastic camera, but without the resolution or video.

The D800, however, appears to have all the bases covered - the 5D3 will have to compete head-to-head, rather than simply covering the weaknesses of its rival, like the 5D2 did.

51-point AF system with 15 cross-type AF points.

And apparently you can use crop lenses, too. That's kind of cool.

Ahhh....I wasn't aware their other cameras had it. Pretty cool though. I wish Canon did that.
