A friend of mine recently had his gear taken during a burgulary of his home. He had recorded the serial numbers on his laptop, but unfortunately, the laptop was also taken. Just curious as to where you record your serial numbers? Also, any recommendations for storing them. I keep mine on a SD card.

I do online backups with Crashplan in addition on my own hard drive based backups. For small amounts of data, you could just store it on Dropbox, Skydrive, Google Docs, or just email it to a webmail account.

I have my serial numbers registered with Canon UK, dunno if you can do the same in Ireland. I also keep them stored on Evernote and Dropbox - the Cloud is perfect for this sort of stuff.

my insurance company has a list of what camera gear I've got, and we file away documents & receipts in a filing cabinet. Turns out recently when we had our TV stolen the serial number wasn't on the receipt though so not much use there!. After getting a new TV and unpacking it, dispatched the box to the storage shed where - you guessed it, the old box was, complete with serial number so at least it's now recorded in the police records as being stolen.

Have since then updated a spreadsheet of serial numbers and e-mailed it to myself so it's accessable via webmail in necessary.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Hmm the Canadian website doesn't let you register lenses, only bodies.

Unless I'm missing something???

If your friend has any RAW images (backup disk, emailed to someone) - a serial # for the camera which took the image is stored there.

My insurance company has all the serials but I like the evernote and dropbox ideas too. I'll be doing that this weekend! :)
