Well, I've been browsing this forum for awhile and finally decided to post for some advice...

Currently I am a HS student with no job... so budget is an issue for me in this next lens decision.

I have a kit canon t2i, gripped, with a 50 1.4 and a sigma 10-20 4-5.6 currently.

I currently have a rough budget of $500 and at this point am debating saving for a different lens or going with the 70-200 f/4 nonIS. My reason being: I am not entirely sure what I want to primarily shoot yet, so i figure adding a longer range will have my bases covered basically and I can cater my needs after using all different ranges.

My other option would be some ND filters for my sigma for landscapes and a new, better tripod. Or perhaps a flash...

My eventual goal is to work with timelapses, however I dont mind shooting portraits at all lately... So eventual lenses I have on my list are the 24-70 2.8L, a rokinon 35 1.4 or 35L, or the 16-35L...

Any advice on the move to get the 70-200 next?

Thanks

The 70-200 is a nice lens. It's easy to sell later on too if you save up enough to upgrade to say, the IS version ;)

The 24-70 and 16-35... they're not too wide on your body after being cropped by 1.6x. They usually attract full-frame users. If you're interested in the 24-70, the 17-55 IS may be a better choice. Great lens, but probably out of your budget for now.

No matter which lenses you get, for portraiture..you're going to need a flash and a good tripod(for landscapes as well).

Winwin, ya I realize those are more FF geared but eventually i would be switching over... For now the 70-200 is looking very appealing

Tanker, yes I definitely need a new tripod, and flash, those 2 along with the 70-200 will most likely be my next few purchases...

Not being sure of what you want to shoot kinda hurts the suggestion booth.
My workhorse portrait lens is my Tamron 28-75. Its in your budget and a good FL for portraits on a crop body. If you are doing more portraits though, then I would say get a flash or two. Your 50mm is fine for portraits and off-camera lighting will really open up your portrait work and creativity more than a lens will.

That tamron does look pretty good, I will definitely be considering it...

So I guess right now my next purchase would one of these:

Tamron 28-75 2.8
Canon 70-200 4 nonIS
Or
Canon 430exII and an induro akb2 tripod...

I am leaning towards the flash/tripod right now,

however In a few months I will be going to Denver for a week around red rocks, and the city, as well as maybe a day trip to pikes peak... I think the sigma will do well in these environments mostly, and I will probably be able to borrow a 24-105 for this trip. So, it is a matter of if i would like a 70-200 there or a better tripod and a flash. (either way this equipment will get more use than just that one trip but it would be nice to utilize it there).

you'll enjoy the 70-200 f4. it's one of the best value lenses Canon produces.

Completely torn about it all haha.
The 85 1.8 has also entered into the running...

tripod/85 1.8
tripod/430exII
70-200
these are my 3 options as of now.

(at this point im baggin the zoom lenses i mentioned earlier 17-50,28-75,24-70, etc.)
Also, think trading the 50 1.4 for a 85 1.8 would be a decent decision?

Take a look at the Canon 55-250/3.5-5.6 - there's a couple of good threads on it here. It's a lot cheaper, and the IQ of photos with it are very good!

you seem pretty good with the wide angle and the 50 really covers you well enough in the mid range. i'd go for some kind of zoom. the 28-75 will overlap your prime. you can get by with the 50mm in the mid range by just moving your feet.

i have both and i rarely use my prime unless im indoors.

so if it were me and i wanted to cover all my bases, get the 28-75 and sell the 50mm and get a zoom. or keep the 50mm and get a zoom.

you dont really have the NEED for both.
