I like detail B&W brings out so I did a conversion of a colour shot.

Disagree completely. Go back through this thread and I can guarantee probably only 10% of the images are interesting. Compare that to some of the other prime threads and you'll see many more positive comments. I do agree the good photos in this thread were created by talented photographers, however, talent is only one part of the equation. Enjoy your lens :)

What makes the photos shot on a prime more interesting? Because they have a shallower depth of field?

There's more to interesting photos that blurring out the background with a large aperture and/or long focal length. Quite frankly its often overdone. Anyone can open the aperture the blur out the background.

Nice shots everyone. Question Need a long focal length to compliment my 24-70 II Should I go 70-200 or 135L?

70-200 mkii is an amazing lens, I also had the 135L and although it was a fantastic peace of glass it was a nice to have. The 70-200 is a must have lens for me, its also the sharpest lens I have and produces some stunning shots!!

Yeah.I have both the 2.8 II and the F4 which I kept as a light travel zoom. Both very sharp lenses.

First shoots from my MKii

Any feedback on this shoot, I was testing for image sharpness and also DOF at the same time. I'm really happy with this but some of the shots I took today with the 24-70 didn't seem to have the WOW factor  I really wish we could get some decent light here in the UK, I'm so sick of being stuck under a grey cloud all the time. It's like living in Black and White............... :(

Think I need to spend a day walking around with both my mk-i and mk-ii just to get some comparison shoots.

PS: This image looks 10 times better when viewed in Flickr.

Great shots!

They actually have a Bond World theme up there. All the posters from the first to the last movie when you walk down the hall. There are helicopter and bobsled simulators. The rotating restaurant has 007 on the upper corners of the observation glass. 007 on the plates, etc. Even the cable cars play a little Bond music before they take off. I was in heaven.

Just as you get into Bond World

Nice to see some good discussion and activity in this thread :) Like I said earlier, I've had the 24-70 in the past and while it's king for versatility - it limits you in many other ways: Shallow DOF at wider focal lengths, weight/size, ability to shoot in low light (indoor) without a flash or good ambient light.

Since you mentioned comparing similar focal lengths, how about we utilize the Canon 24mm F1.4 prime as an example. It has the ability to capture 4x the light as the zoom, while also having the ability to provide shallow DOF at a wide angle focal length. Obviously it's limited to the one focal length, which is where the zoom shines and has great sharpness across the range. However, I'd argue that sharpness definitely isn't everything and depending on the type of photography you enjoy - won't make up for other shortcomings of the lens.

Thanks for the comments on my Flickr site :) I'd argue that more than 50% of my photos are taken at f2 or below - so unfortunately that is why the 24-70 didn't stay in my bag.

Looking forward to seeing some more exciting/creative shots in this thread...

-Brandon

I think you're mistaking my point. I acknowledge that large apertures have their place, I'm simply in disagreement with your statements in reference to a large aperture inherently creating more interest in photos than a smaller one. But, lucky for us no one is forcing us to be in agreement. :)
