I saw this saying the 24-70 II has onion bokeh ..it makes me sad. Although I don't see it in any of your photos guys!

I sure like the outer edges on that first one Steve.

Yeah, the edges are simply amazing actually, wide open... *most of the time*

I say this because the right hand side has a tendency to be softer. From what I can tell, it is like weird field curvature on one side only. Items in the foreground, or closer to the plane of focus generally appear really good on the right hand side. Approach infinity though, it is much softer than the left. Others have noted this as well, but with the left side.

So when the right side does work out, it is really sharp even into the extreme corners. But closer to infinity (it appears) it can soften.

Because of this I emailed CPS asking if there is something they can do to correct such an issue... They sent me a prepaid overnight label to send it to them. So I did... They just received it actually about 45mins ago... Curious to what the outcome is... I should have the lens back tomorrow or Thursday most likely. I also sent my body with it so they can check/calibrate it with it, so in a way at worst they calibrate the lens to the body.

I am very happy otherwise... I just wonder what is going on with the field curvature on the right side. I don't think it is lens decentering anymore only because I have razor sharp edges sometimes, but most of the time not. I figure if it was an issue with alignment it would always be soft or show other flaws, such as CA and all that. But hopefully they actually slap the lens on a collimator or whatever they got to check that out with and see if there is an issue or not. If not, ill be happy as is... At least I had them look at it and I don't drive myself crazy!

We shall see! :D

I never owned the Mk. I but the 24-70 II feels almost identical to a 24-105L now... I did not notice much weight difference, or balance difference between them.

Not sure if you have or used a 24-105, but that is what it feels like now!

Keep us posted.

Will do! I got my PDF's a few hours ago showing they received both items. I had to call them though and request that they change the return address to Fedex so I can pick it up. Everybody I spoke with was extremely nice.

The PDF issue description is more detailed than it usually is which is nice. The technician will have more information. Usually they condense a paragraph of issues into something like "Check Focus" or something blunt :p I am debating about calling Canon NJ tomorrow and seeing if I can speak to who worked on my lens to see what was really wrong, if anything, and what they did to resolve it.

Will update when I get it back! Should be Thursday morning.

If I were Canon, I'd be nice to you too. You, practically singlehandedly, are saving this thread.
Bravo.

Exactly ^ :D I thought IS was required for me but after using this lens it has changed my mind. I still hand-hold down to 1/20 or so with great results. Sure I may have been able to do 1/10 or so reliably with the 24-105L at 24mm, but beyond that 1 or 1.5 stops, it was hit and miss. IS is generally good for a stop or two for me though, even with the 4-stop IS of the 70-200 II... Most of time I try to limit my 200mm shooting to 1/100 or 1/50 at worst. I have done less, but keeper rate drops a bunch after that point.

A few more I just uploaded:

I really like this pic, although I wish there was a zombie in the foreground walking toward the camera.

There is an amusement park nearby that has a Halloween theme going on this month and I really wanted to bring my camera, but that essentially means no rides because there is no way in hell I'm going to leave any equipment sitting at the ride exit.

Yeah... Sadly they are restricted to certain 'zones' and the haunted houses so the chances of a zombie being present is basically zero! :p

I always bring my camera to parks... But what I generally do is if we are out of town at a new park that we don't usually go to is put the camera in the trunk (before even driving to the park so nobody can see the bag be put in there) and enjoy the park all morning and do our riding, then go to the car and grab the camera later in the day. Cedar Point (where the pictures were taken) is only an hour away from me, so I will go and not even ride anything, especially during Halloween stuff. We tend to enjoy the other stuff more than the rides. On Friday's lines can be so short my girlfriend will just hold my stuff while I hop on something.

I have my stuff insured, so if somebody should steal everything I have that peace of mind in the back of my head. No issues yet though, knock on wood!

Well, this is far from an unadulterated image. 6 vertical shots, each shot is 4 exposures, blended and merged and edited in PS....You lose so much downrezzing from 16,000 pixels to 1000 but here you go:

Nice shot! Would love to see a full resolution image. I once shot similar (but not nearly as nice) image with my 70-200 II at 70mm... I believe the end result had 50 images or so stitched together in CS5. The resolution was insane once you hit that 100% button!

Well Canon is done with my lens and body... Got my shipping info just now... Will have it in my hands tomorrow morning. Curious to see what was wrong (or not) and what they did (or didn't do!).

Got to love CPS for the quick turnaround! Shipped Monday and back to me Thursday!

You have to be kidding me. I would kill for that service. Although I'm from Canada I ship my gear to NJ because of the 10 day turn around time for non pro service. It takes a little longer up here. NJ does not ship back to Canada so I use a parcel service just over the border. Still worth the 1 1/2 hour drive.

BTW I can't imagine your lens being any better than it is.

Yeah, I LOVE the CPS service. Anytime I send anything on Monday I always have it back that same Friday. It is so nice. I am only 2-day ship time away from them, so they get the items Wednesday... They usually done by Thursday and overnight them back to me. Since they sent me overnight label they got it a day early, so I got it back a day early as well. Win win! I just see now they are sending it back Priority overnight, so it will be ready for pickup by 9am. Quite nice!

As far as the repair,as long as it is not any worse! I will be curious if they somehow corrected the right side issue if there was any real issue. If not, at least they looked at it and I have peace of mind. If there was something and they corrected it, I will be happy! At least it is calibrated to my body now (had backfocusing at 24mm and front focusing at 70mm which I corrected with -4/+3 MA). So hopefully won't need to microadjust it anymore.

But if that right side ends up being as good as the left after this repair... I will be amazed even more with this lens than I already was.

I just really hope the repair doesn't just say "Checked, calibrated and cleaned" or something non-descriptive. Hopefully it has some real substance to it explaining to me exactly what they did. Sometimes they are good with that, other times it can be a bit blunt.
