Heres a quick comparison at 24mm. The worst part of the 24-105's focal range vs the new lens. Things even up a lot after 24mm.

The 24-70 seems to suffer a lot from field curvature which doesnt play nice with DOF.

Thanks for the sample raw files! Where was the focus point? DPP shows an array of points but not a specific point.

So is Does it really perform like the 70-200 mkii in terms of focusing and sharpness at 2.8?

This thread does have some great samples and data already. Can the mods merge these two threads?

according to the charts, it should, but in practice, maybe not. 4 stop IS should give the 70-200 the edge no matter what focal length you shoot at.

The more I play with this lens, the more I love it.
Its sharp, no question. Sure it is theoretically a little less sharp than the 70-200 2.8 II at 70mm, good luck picking it. But you can also get in much closer, if I need 70mm, I will grab this lens due to better subject distance and weight.
Focus speed is faster than any lens I have used, even in low light its as quick as me pushing the shutter button. I put it out of focus, point at a subject, push the shutter release button and it focuses and shoots in one motion with out noticeable delay. Subjective test, sure... but that's how I use it, any lag from this lens isn't going to hinder me getting a shot.

I was shooting @ 1\50s last night, I don't like being this slow due to people motion blur, I would sooner up the ISO or put on the flash than risk the subject moving. So I just don't see IS being any help for me 99% of the time. But if it had IS I would be more content with the price.
Bokeh is good IMO
Plastic is good IMO
Flare handling is good IMO
If I had to come up with a complaint, it would be that I paid for IS but didn't get it! lol

I would love to see test shots side by side with the 24L 35L 50L @f/2.8

I'm still mind blown that the new 24-70mm mk ii beats the canon 24mm tse ii, since the tilt shift lens is one of the sharpest 24mm lenses to date.

This. Is interesting. My 24tse is OK but I;m not blown away with its sharpness, its the other aspects of it are good.

It certainly surprised me. This is why I'd like to see how it compares to the 24L
I have been very happy with the TSE24, but now I'm wandering if I have a not so good copy. However I love being able to shift, so I doubt I would part with it.
I should also test them at smaller apertures, the test was at wide open for the TSE24, which is not where its commonly used and very likely not its sweet spot.

The other thread is only a single page and doesn't have any interesting or original information. It also doesn't have any images from actual owners. This is the thread of record (so to speak) as far as I'm concerned.

24-70 mk ii > 24mm tse ii > zeiss 21mm > 24mm ii > 24mm tse I > 24mm mk 1

this might be the new hierarchy

We are interested in shooting wide open though. Can do some F/4 samples? Why would you get a 24-70 mkii for primarily landscapes?

Why on earth would you not???
Tiresome that all the shoot everything wide open people have no understanding about stopped down tests or usage....
And no all lenses are not the same by f/8 or f/11, not even close!
