Color and exposure look good, but trade off some ISO to get better shutter speed (too much blur at 1/250"). Try ISO 1600.

Get lower.

Use the vertical beams on the back wall as a plumb line to straighten your horizon.

Try to get both eyes of the subject.

Personally that would be a delete or only used if that was the only image of her I got.

I want to see her facial expression, 40 is distracting, the horizon is off, exposure is about 2 stops under, and it could be cropped tighter.

Not sure what your 40D can shoot at ISO wise, but as Clarence stated you need to do what you can to limit motion blur. I'd rather have a grainy image then a blurry one.

I'm not sure I'd delete it. It all depends why your are shooting. I would not submit it to a publisher unless the girl was the MVP, or if that was the game winning shot, or if I didn't have any other shots of her..which I'm hoping I would. As far as parent sales goes, I'd keep it if the subject was in focus.

Also the image looks like it could use some more fill lighting in post. Not a lot. I think you could up it a tad without adding much noise.

Other issues that need to addressed is that you need to straighten the vertical lines, and crop tighter to remove some head room.

Keep at it. :D

Also: This should be posted in the image section, not the talk. You might get more response if it was posted there. ;-)a

From other thread:

wow thats great stuff DC fan
no way I can shoot that fast
I would love to learn how you do that
I cant balence the high iso fast shutter speed and low light
If I get 1/250 out of mine Im lucky

Clarence said "Just open the aperture to f/2.8 and crank the ISO to keep your shutter speeds up. ISO 3200 or even 6400. Try to maintain 1/640" or 1/800".

If I do that its basically a black cat in a closed closet

Im glad you guys have it figured out
Im trying

thanks again great shots

What do you mean exactly?

Crank up ISO (40d goes to 3200, right?) then find a shutter speed that gives you a good exposure. 1/500 is the minimum to mostly freeze action; if you can't reach 1/500 with all of your other settings maxed out (f/2.8, ISO3200), then the available light is below what your gear needs for proper sports photos. Your options then are either a faster lens, faster body, strobes or kicking that gym to the curb and finding a better (probably newer) one with proper lighting.

A good exposure for me is one that almost or just begins to blow out the home jerseys. This minimizes noise. Try not to rely on post-processing for exposure correction, unless you absolutely have to. With ISO3200, some noise reduction and sharpening will go a long way and should produce pleasing results... I do this with my lesser model 400d on a regular basis.

might be true
it probably is
I may be fighting a losing battle?

Your 400D must be better than my 40D?
I know your a better camera guy than me
I do need a 85mm 1.8 or better I would seem

Thanks for the info

A stop of exposure is a stop. Doesn't matter if it's a stop of ISO or a stop of shutter speed... it's up to you to choose where to use the available stops... aperture, ISO, shutter speed... take from one and use it in another.

Working with the exact same exposure (exact same gym, exact same camera, exact same lens, exact same photographer) you could trade a stop of ISO for twice the shutter speed.

In your picture above, if you double your ISO from 1000 to 2000 (that's a stop), you can then double your shutter speed (that's a stop) from 1/250 to 1/500".

If raising your ISO from 1000 to 2000 and increasing your shutter speed to 1/500" gives you "a black cat in a closed closet", then something definitely isn't right.
