As the title says, would you switch to Nikon of the 5dmk3 is more of a sidestep instead of a step forward fro, the 5dmk2 and not even as goo as a d700?

The d800 on paper is astonishing and priced pretty well as welll. Can canon match that? if not then why stick with canon when you will have to wait another 4-5 years for us to see if canon can finally make a FF body that can compete with nikons aka 5dmk4?

i see many people sayig they would consider switching to nikon if this is the case.

Thoughts?

I'm locked in by too much glass.... and after the OM debacle I said I'd never do it again :(

Several cameras and more glass than I will admit to.

I just want to know when it is going to be announced (new Canon)..then well see..I really want the 200-400 but know it is going to be priced at like $$$$$ where Nikons is more of a $$$$...still expensive but with the way the new lenses have been priced.

Probably going to switch to Canon's cinema line regardless and keep a 5D II for photos, really the 5D II is just down right awesome, they would have to make some pretty drastic improvements to the 5D III to make me want to upgrade.

I don't like using Nikons and would never switch because of that. Canons handle better and the controls are laid out much easier for me.

*edit* Also, if the 5D3 is a dud the 1Dx will still make the price of a 1Ds mk3 come down and I'd rather switch to that for my FF camera... Or just keep my 5D2, it's a great camera, just has crappy out dated AF. Even then I only NEED great AF for sports/action and that's what the 1D3 is for.

oddly, the 5d3 could be a pile of poo and I still wouldn't switch from Canon. On the other hand, I'm not contemplating buying one either.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I wouldn't switch entirely. The D800 will be a nice toy to play with.

Nope...

In fact, even the 1DX isn't my ideal camera. I'd rather add another 1DMkIV

Nope wouldn't switch, am really tempted with the 1Dx after the price settles, 7D + 1Dx both 18MP sounds good.

Competition is good, eventually Canon will lead again so its not really worth it switching back and forth

Exactly! If you don't like what is offered... just keep what you have until the next great "Nikon Killer" Canon camera comes out. The buy it, and wait for Nikon to top that... it happens all the time.

Honestly, I'm very disappointed in the D800. I thought the D700 was nearly the perfect combination of good MP size with FF and great autofocus... all for a good price. Had I been getting into DSLR's for the first time... I'd have a D700 right now. But, since I have a significant investment in Canon glass, I'll just hang on until Canon decides to make a "budget" FF camera with good AF.

Heck no - my 5dII takes stunning pictures - and it will keep on taking stunning pictures long after the hoopla from all of these announcements go away....

If Canon blows it with the 5D3 (something I think is very likely, actually), then I'll think really hard about buying into a D800 system. I'd prefer it have a faster burst rate but that's the only complaint I'm likely to have about it.

My only other alternative would be to remain with Canon's high-end crop line. I've got enough invested in it that I'm not likely to ditch it even if I bought into a D800 system. Frankly, the 7D is quite good already, so maybe I'm better off just being happy with what I've got.
