I have the G9 and G11, and prefer the G11. I use the swivel LCD all the time. If you use the G9 more as an RF style camera, then the swivel LCD may not be a factor. The G11/G12 have essentially the same image quality at all ISOs, and can give you better results up to ISO 3200 than the G9 is able to do. I just compared side-by-side images of the G9 and G12 on the I-R Comparometer, and they seem pretty close with the G9 at ISO 400 and the G12 at ISO 800, so looks like a one stop difference.

The G9 lens can take you to 210mm equiv., while the G12 is limited to 140mme. That may also be a factor for you. It took me a while to get used to the loss in zoom range, but I can live with it.

The latest chatter is about the new G1 X due out soon. The large image sensor will substantially improve DR and high ISO results, but sounds like it will perform comparably to the G12 shutter lag, etc. And, of course it will cost twice as much. Since you already have DSLRs, you may not be concerned about quick performance, but would like DSLR image quality. Something to consider.

My guess would be you would miss the G9 RF qualities. The G9 also handles well when compared to my G11, with less accidental activation of the Menu button, and others on the back side. You might be interested in getting one G1 X, and keeping your G9s?

Love my lil' G9. I agree with Dennis and will likely not move until the G1 X is out and about.

Since you and your wife use your G9s as RF style cameras, you might appreciate the link below to set it up for quick street shots. If you have not seen this before, it may "refresh" your interest in keeping the G9s?

Another factor in favor with the G9 is 12 MP vs 10 MP for G12. At lower ISOs you have a little more digital info available if you crop images without much detail loss. I have the Canon 2.0x tele converter lens, as well as the 0.75x wide converter lens. This lets me get a range of 420 mm to 26 mm equivalent with my G9. It has come in handy at times.

I won't give up the zoom range in such a small body (G9 over any post G9 body).
Usually I find I can figure out a way to back up a bit to get a wide enough composition but I can't run far enough out to make up for lack of zoom capability between 140 to 210mm or especially counting the 2X Canon telephoto lens...betwen 210 and 420mm. Just not enough time or just impractical.

Lotsa stuff, running outta room and a wife...I keep looking at her and wondering???

I had the G10, and really liked it, but I have to say, I really do like the viewfinder on the G12...

One thing you might miss making the move is the G9's time lapse movie option that the G12 does not have. If you need ISO400-800 shots to be usable, the G12 wins that.

The G9 can do ISO 800 shots with the right circumstances and processing from RAW, and some Noiseware Pro effort. This one was from 3 years ago when my grandson was born. It was taken hand held, using a reading lamp for lighting. He had a bili light on his back, thus the purple light showing through.

I love my G9 and had been waiting to hear about any follow on to the 12. Well the G1X was announced and I've been reading about it. I don't like the larger form factor nor the difference in macro shooting ability. There are pros and cons of course. Canon has said they will still be selling the 12 for another year and that the 1X is not a direct replacement. Time will tell.

So you have some time to decide to pull the trigger on a 12 to replace the 9.
