I've had my 5D2 about a month, and noticed this for the first time last week. This photo was taken with my 24-105. Tonight I noticed the same thing, same place in a low light pic with the 17-40. Is this what I think it is? And is there a solution aside from sending it in?

Here the the pic OOC - resized only:

And here is a 100% crop - again, resized only:

No. At least I seriously doubt it.

I suspect this is noise often seen a long exposures and/or night exposures. Long-exposure noise reduction will get rid of most of it, other NR algorithms will often get rid of it by default.

What did you sue to get the .jpeg? Out of camera or did you shoot raw?

If Raw the raw converter should have something to deal with it, if .jpeg from camera, perhaps someone could give a better pointer than I.

ACR that I got with Elements seems to remove these by default, the main raw converter I use is Bibble, which has several NR algorithms and specific hot-pixel removing plugins.

Edit: sometimes it can seem like hot pixels becasue the same pixel will be hot for a while during a shoot, but then more pixels might go hot and others back to normal. So just testing with several back-to-back-shots won't tell you. I suspect though that if you leave the camera off for a while and take a dark frame (say ISO100, 1/100s with the lens cap on), you will not see the same pixels light up as in your night shoots.

Yes, these were both low light/night shots and I hadn't noticed it in my daylight shots. Both shots were jpeg. I hope it's just noise, but I wasn't sure.

How long was the exposure? Have you tried turning LENR (Long Exposure Noise Reduction) on?

Just do a manual self clean with the body cap for a minute or so, apparently that remaps the sensor or something similiar

Yes. Manual self clean for one minute. It probably shakes the stuck pixel loose or remaps also. Not sure, but it works.

happens on my 550D as well, sometimes it appears in different areas.. i personally think its just noise especially on long exposures.. i usually just get 1 or 2.. quite easy to remove in post.. i wouldnt worry about it unless its a constant blot that appears in all your photos.. just my opinion.. :D

Yes, it could be a dead pixel, or worse, a small cluster. But before you rush the camera back for a replacement, remember that all sensors have their share of them, they are a fact of life.

The 5D2 allows you to map them out in camera, after that you will never be aware of them again. Or as I prefer to do, deal with them in post processing, again a simple matter.
