If i will use only Canon FF body then:

16-35L
24-70
70-200
100 macro
300 or 400 tele + 1.4x/2x for reach

Above are my main lenses to use for years and years [don't have 400 prime], and i don't feel i miss something at all until i can go very dedicated for something, such as architecture then TS is a must, or landscape then i prefer some WA/UWA lenses over the zoom even TS is a big choice, or birding then i should have 500 or longer primes.

Realistic is what I already own:
35mm 1.4L
24-70mm 2.8L
70-200mm f4 IS L
85mm 1.8

Desirable lens collection:
35mm f1.4L
85mm f1.2L II L
24-70mm 2.8L
70-200mm f2.8 IS II L

The 85mm 1.2 II L is too rich for my blood. I might sell my 70-200mm f4 IS & 85mm f1.8 to help fund the 70-200 2.8 IS II.

Revisiting this post that I made a little over 3 years ago. I am now 99.9% satisified with my lens collection. Only lens that I "want" is an ultra wide angle lens. But I generally don't shoot landscapes enough to justify the purchase.

Current lens set-up:

  • Canon 35mm f1.4L (Only lens that I still have from previous post 3 years ago)
  • Sigma 85mm f1.4
  • Canon 135mm f2.0L
  • Canon 24-70 f2.8L II
  • Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS II

5D IV | 35 f1.4L | 50 f1.8 STM | 85 f1.4L IS | 135 f2L | 16-35 f4L IS | 24-70 f2.8L II | 70-200 f2.8L IS II | 600EX RT | Gear List | Semper Fi

  • Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L
  • Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II
  • Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II
  • Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS
  • Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II

Maybe I'll replace the TS-E with the hypothetical 14-24mm if it is ever released. I have some primes lying around but they never get used as much as the zooms (or the supertelephotos).

I can get by real good with 3 primes, 17TSE, 50L, 135L

with 5 lenses, 24-70F2.8 VC, and maybe something for the long, like 100-400 or tamron's 150-600.

Resurrecting the thread for an updated list. I just sold the 90TS-E because it simply was not being used and I've been eager to buy the 35L since an AD for an ongoing project loves it when I rent one for his shoots.

My current kit consists of 35L, 50L and 135L to go with the 1Ds3. The only lens I'd add is an 85L and rent anything else if a project required. Back when I started, I shot Nikon and owned combinations of 35-70/2.8, 80-200/2.8, 24/2.8, 50/1.8, 85/1.8 and 180/2.8. It's funny how the older I get the more I subscribe to the quality over quantity theory. My work does not require me to move around in order to capture the image, I'll take lens speed over zooms anytime.

for the budget I envision ever really having.

10-18 stm
15-85mm (bought used) or sigma 17-50 2.8 os also used, but cheaper)
55-250 stm
30 sig 1.4 (old one bought used)
90-150 macro lens (which ever one I can find used for under 350 bucks)

I could say all sorts of kits (and have before) but I honestly will probably not ever even have all of this (but might have worked out a 10-18 soon :)

Canon 50 1.2
Canon 16-35mm II
Canon 24-70 2.8 II

This is what I'm switching to as we speak. Just need to add a x1.4 for the 70-200. Best quality and affordable setup IMO.
