Let say the lens is labeled as Made in Japan with the code label manufactured from xxx Prefecture, Japan.

But does that mean it's 100% made in Japan?

Or only the lens and other critical component are made in Japan?

Or worst, all of the component of the lens are manufacture from some other developing countries and the final assembly and Quality Inspection are done in Japan?

What do you are think about this?

I've always been under the impression that everything was made and assembled at the Canon factory in Japan....but I really don't know. As far as I'm concerned, it really doesn't matter as long as the quality standards are kept.

i would think everything is assembled at the canon factory. i would also think that compared to the average manufacturer of anything other than jet engine parts the tolerances and over all quality control is way above adequate. japan still takes a lot of pride in what it manufactures. made in china is another story.
you might google something like canon assembly plant usa. i know nothing about canon's manufacturing facilities. if we are assembling components in america it falls somewhere between japan and china.
i say all this with a history that includes time with a company that manufactured auto parts for american and japanese car makers. i now sell building materials and base my comment about china on the materials i've seen imported over the last 10 or 15 years.
so, i'm not just spouting off at the mouth. if you ever choose to buy an american car i'll be glad to tell you who has the highest/lowest qc standards for the parts they use.

so that mean, they won't do a typical automaker manufacturer or like iphone where most of it was assembled in China buy ship back to the State for final assembly?

And when they mean "Made in Japan" that's as good as the Swiss watches "Swiss Made" label?
