If you'd like to review wider possibilities Ben is too modest, but you should also look into the tripod FAQ that he spends a lot of time maintaining.

Agreed. Give that excellent thread a good read and I think you'll find it to be very helpful.

Check the Feisol 3441. It comes as a Tall and Standard version, depending on your height. Great travel product.

You haven't mentioned price.

The adage is that among low price, low weight and stability, you can only have two for any tripod. I found this to be true from personal experience, regardless of the claims about inexpensive, lightweight sticks.

Before I bought my Gitzo 2451 I read an article that was titled something along the line how to spend over $1000 buying a tripod. The idea was you start with something inexpensive and keep upgrading until you end up paying a lot more.
That being said, I've heard good things about Feisol for a lot less money. If you need to pack it small, get something with 4 sections.

Or do like I did. After reading all of the great advice on this forum (and a lot of help from Ben R's posts), I bought a Gitzo 3541 w/ a Markins M-20 ...and... a Gitzo 1541 with a Markins Q3T. Those were the first tripods I've ever purchased and I'm fairly certain I won't be buying another one for a very, very long time.

That was a pretty big credit card bill to pay off that month!

+1

I have this one A0109 with a Vangard SBH-50 ball. Lightweight and the whole deal fits in the Benro case, flat. I have used it for hiking and travel.

There was an earlier post pointing out using a tripod on a ship will have issues from the ships engines creating harmonic vibrations that will cause blurring of the images. I believe hand holding the camera will reduce those effects as our bodies soak up the vibrations of the ships engines.
