Ive always left my camera on spot-metering becuase it focusing the metering on the point i want to focus and expose.... therefore if i understand it right, leaves a big window to over/under expose other areas.. can someone help me better understand the other 3 modes?

Im not quite sure if i need to just leave it be or adjust for certain situations... such as being on the beach in the sun!?

Have a read up on it all & then take it from there & sus out when to use what. Everyone is different so there isn't really a wrong or right answer.

I tend to use partial with exp lock on the shutter button. For urbex & landscape I tend to favour evaluative slightly [Urbex I usually HDR at +/-2ev] & I don't find I often use spot metering at all.

I also use back button focus which nicely splits the 2 functions :)

I am under impression that Evaluative tends to look more at the entire picture & thus may be a better compromise in most situations. All other metering modes are biased one way or another. Way back when I would play with different modes, and used Spot a lot, but now I just leave it in Evaluative & try to get a decent exposure by changing EC and diff parameters.

You might acquire some good info by going to the link http://www.learn.usa.canon.com …s/eos_60d_tutorials.shtml (external link) and then selecting the "Basic+" tutorial at the bottom. Although the site is specific to the 60D many of the functions are very similar for the T3i.
