For weddings, what lens make you say "wow" on cropped bodies?

Hello friends,

I've got a couple of questions. I'm looking for a lens that makes you say "wow" on a cropped body. The canon 85 f1.2 on a full frame body is a special combination. I have also seen the Nikon D3's with the 85 and I'm always pleased with the sharpness and the bokeh it delivers.
Big fan of this guy's work http://meninenuotrauka.lt …ing/2011/brigita_vincent/ (external link)

Can the canon 50mm f1.2 deliver these kind of images on a cropped body or is it the larger sensors that make the images?

Apart from that question, is there any lens that makes you say wow other than the 70-200 MKII? I've shot with this lens but I have to get way back in order to see the "wow" factor on portraits. Looking for something I can stand closer to my subjects for weddings.

Wow depends on many factors that make an image appealing, and some of those factors are related to depth of field control that only full frame cameras (or larger formats) can produce. Others are not and can be done without the depth of field effect of full frame. It's ultimately not about whether it's possible to take great photos, but rather about under what circumstances, under how many conditions, and in how many ways it can be done. More versatility means access to more factors of appealing images.

For a crop there is Nothing better than a 17-55. I also liked the 35L on a crop. Lots of people have had great copies of the sigma 30mm but unfortunately,, I was not one of those lucky ones

Crops my choice would be

17-55
10-22
70-200 F/2.8IS

Sigma 30 1.4 (external link)

and

Canon 10-22 (external link)

The Tamron 17-50 2.8 (external link) is underrated too.

200 F/2 IS sounds awesome, but effective 320mm sounds unwieldy for almost all wedding situations.

Sure would be good from the balcony of a catholic church wedding:lol:

Those expensive primes are insanely awesome but for the life of me, do not understand why people buy them, specially with the 135L being as good as it is. Maybe the concert guys or shooters that need reach in that type of lighting, but that sure is a select few isn't it.....I tend to think its about bragging rights for photographers more than anything else

The 200mm f/2 has numerous sports photography applications where you need fast shutter speeds.

200 f/2 is great for portraits, too. But the 135L on a crop can be a bit rough, so I agree the 200L is asking for trouble.

I know Nick can speak for himself, but from our conversations together I dont believe he used the 200 f2 much for weddings. He did a lot of stage/performance photography before (where the 200 has great uses) but sold it when he started doing weddings.
