Been what..5 years in the making?

http://www.dpreview.com …012/02/09/Sony_Full_Frame (external link)

Engadget's opinion made me roll my eyes a bit:

http://www.engadget.com …-ssm-lens-hands-on-video/ (external link)

The lens focused surprisingly quickly, especially given its massive 500mm fixed focal length. Moving from subject to subject at varying distances, we were typically able to achieve focus in a fraction of a second. Long lenses have traditionally been tricky on the focus front, but this guy handled it like a champ, with speeds that appeared to rival far shorter primes

Really? Really? Really? Have you ever used any of Canon or Nikon's big primes? Im pretty darn sure they have no issues focusing despite their "massive" focal length...Not to mention are probubly just as fast... Bit of undue praise IMHO Of course its Engadget and they dont know anything about actual -photography- gear...

Also according to a link on Engadget, the price is set...at 1,312,500 yen....or $17,000

http://www.sony.jp …cts/SAL500F40G/index.html (external link)

Maybe we should STFU about Canon's pricing

Obviously they've never used a 300 2.8 or 400 2.8 from either Nikon or Canon.

Reading high end lens reviews at engadget is kind of like doing your groceries shopping at a gas station.

TweakMDS didn't even mention Sony in his reply. It's that Engadget isn't the most knowledgeable source for photography reviews.

Sony makes great photography gear. Engadget is talking about the new Sony lens as if it's never been done before when in fact Canon and Nikon have made similar lenses that function just as well.

That is a lot of money for a lens marketed for a flagship camera with a 9-point AF system! No wonder they will be hand built to order

If sony updates their A900 at all, and it somehow includes video, ill walk the plank and JUMP!

I wouldn't mind a collaborative arrangement between all the companies to produce gear.

Sony produces sensors
Nikon produces bodies
Canon produces lenses, with Zeiss optics.
Leica in charge of quality control.

Zeiss optics FTW! One thing going for the Alpha's is all of that drool worthy goodness working with AF. My mate got 'paid' for shooting their UK catalogue a Zeiss 24-70 2.8, and needless to say loves it.

From DPR http://www.dpreview.com …012/02/09/Sony_Full_Frame (external link)

Sony has confirmed it will be making a full-frame replacement for its flagship A900 DSLR. No further details were given during a round-table discussion at the CP+ show in Japan, but we find it hard to believe the result will step away from the SLT technology the company has invested so heavily in.

It's probably safe to assume there would be video in the new Sony FF model. But anything is possible.

Ha!

Mark was muttering about this lens last summer, but at that price I think he's simply going feel disappointed. One factor why most of us go Canon or Nikon is Sony stuff is hard to hire as well. Here in the UK Calumet don't want to know, and i'm hard pressed to think of any of the independent Sony hire outlets who would even consider the economic viability of getting in one or two of thoughs and getting a financial return.
