San Diego Surf

There was a good swell this week which made for an unproductive work week. I was hoping it would get a little smaller so I could actually surf but had a blast on Thursday shooting. The air temp was a warm 73 degrees and sunny skies and should have put on more sunblock as the folks in the office gave me the dirty look as I came back with a nice tan. Here's a few from Big Rock (La Jolla) which ended being a tubefest and some later in the day at Rockslides/Indicators (Sunset Cliffs).

I've been able to shoot some sessions with the 400mm 5.6 and am really excited I transitioned from the 100-400mm lens. I will have to admit there's been a few times I wish I could pull the lens back but otherwise 99% of the time I had it pulled back to 400mm. I used a Kenko 1.4X telecon for the Sunset Cliffs pictures and works well but one needs plenty o' light as I kept ratcheting ISO in small increments as I lost light to keep the aperture above f8.

I love these dude! Are you not shooting wide open (f/5.6) with the 400mm? I always shoot it wide open and haven't had any problems with getting the shot I need. It keeps me at lower ISO for as long as possible. I shoot wide open with ISO just high enough to keep me shooting above 1/1000.

I've been shooting TV,set the SS between 1/1000 to 1/1250, ISO bounced between 200-400 so aperture was around f8-11 depending on the morning sun. I haven't really pushed it wide open when shooting in the morning/noon but will give it a shot next time as I will be able to drop ISO to 100.

It was really clean in the morning and seemed to get better with the tide push. Tudor was out there and he was making it look so easy and would get really deep in the barrel. I'm looking to getting out in the water and actually surfing as the winds lately haven't been favorable.

I thought the guy on the yellow board looked like Tudor. I've shot him out there a few times, too.

Nice shots. I'm here in the midwest, so a dumb question: in shots like no. 4, it looks pretty crowded. Are there collisions? Who has the "right of way"?

There were a few collisions as the person closest to where the wave is breaking has the right of way. This spot has a pecking order or hierarchy so if a newbie where to go out there and sit closest to the peak and tried to paddle into a wave would probably not get a wave as the folks (locals) would burn him and paddle in front of him. I've seen fist fights at other spots relatively close to this one for "wave hogging", not respecting locals, or just dropping in and not paying attention.

Thanks buddy as the first few were in the AM light without a teleconverter. As I started looking more at the ones with the teleconverter I can see more degradation.

I didn't know he was out there and when he picked up his first wave I could tell it was him by his super smooth style. He was probably the only guy out there on a single fin as everyone else was on a thruster. Surf should be fun this weekend....get out there!

Yeah man! Forcast looks good! I'll be paddling out for sure!
