Barrel wobble with 35L?

It looks like there is some barrel play on my 35L. This is my first L prime, so I don't know if this is normal or what, but it wiggles a bit at that joint between the focus ring and the distance scale. I'm afraid that with a little more force put on it, the lens might pop in half. Does anyone know about this?

Mine is rock solid. No play at all.

The version I had and used for a few days was also rock solid without barrel play.

The focus ring itself has a little play, probably to allow for temperature expansion/contraction so it doesn't bind up. If you grip the red ring end with one hand and the camera mount end with the other and twist, turn and bend, there should be no movement at all between top and bottom.

That said, many Canon lenses do have a break zone in the middle that absorbs/deflects impact, along with the lens hood, should, for example, camera and lens on a tripod topple. The lens might even look broken in the middle, but I have seen this happen and the guy whose rig toppled popped it all back together and went on shooting.

So, if you do have play between the two halves, not just a little ring wiggle, better have it checked out

thanks for the responses. This one is a little older (UT) and I can't return it. It doesn't look like it affects image quality, but should I still send it somewhere to get tightened up?

I got a second hand one and the images it makes are nothing short of amazing so I wouldn't knock this lens just yet.

...a lens that works perfectly is perfect, what else can one say?

I wouldn't get it fixed unless you can see something is clearly broken.

I just got a like new 35L (less than a year old, babied by a very reputable member). I did notice the plastic covering on the back of the lens will make a wiggle/pop noise, although I visually can not see it move it is so slight. It just seems like the plastic cover having some play and nothing to do with the lens itself inside. The mount does not move relative to the front of the lens. But the plastic between the focus scale window and the back mount will wiggle ever so slightly to make a plastic pop noise. In fact, the plastic cover on my 1.4x II TC does this same thing. Which appears to have very similar plastic and such.

I can not get mine to make the noise/wiggle unless you hold specific points just right. So many people without knowing exactly how to hold it may not be able to recreate it. Because sometimes mine will not do it until I hold it a certain way.

To me, it appears to be 100% non-problem... Just the cover of the lens barrel. Everything else is rock solid and does not move at all. So that is my .02!

No issues though... But you can tell in general, the 35L is not the build quality of many of the other L's in terms of the plastics and such. Still a very solid lens, though. Does not feel cheap or anything.
