If you were buying a 24-70 for the first time, would you go for MK1 or MK2?

I have the 24-105L currently but really need to get some faster zoom glass in that range.
I know it's too early to really compare them, but if you were in the market for a new 24-70
would you go for version I or II?

Price isn't a consideration for me at this point.

I would wait until some people test it that know a lot more about it than most of us do. Wait for some raw file comparisons between the two.

If price is not a consideration for you at all, then id go for the mk2, but as stated, id wait and see what comes from the lens first, maybe you can be one of the ones that show us what its like ;)

I have the original 24-70, but never liked it that much; it is a "jack of all trades and master of none" type lens. If you need this focal length, you may research Mark II as it "may be" sharper...

If cash is not an issue, then get the MkII. It is very unlikely that the Canon would somehow release a lens that is worse than the original!

Well, their new camera technology (18MP) seems to be moving in reverse gear vis-a-vis old (1Ds M3) and Nikon (36MP)...

The MK I is already an excellent lens, I am more than happy with it. The MK II will have better IQ, but IMO I rather go with primes if you are chasing for the ultimate IQ. I will wait til the MK II comes out and wait for a price drop for the MK I and get it.

I've been waiting for the new 24-70 MkII to come out for a while, as well as the 5DIII before I finally update my body but the price is really scary on the MkII lens. The sales prices on the MkI version were tempting but I was scared off a bit by this article that read a while back:

http://www.lensrentals.com …0/the-limits-of-variation (external link)

See the part titled "The 24-70 Mystery" specifically.

Maybe this is the reason that the MkII version doesn't have the "reverse zoom" design.

I'm hoping the 5DIII and the 24-70II will be in a kit package to take a little sting out of the 24-70's price!

^- interesting read

OP i would wait for a bit, that Tamron 24-70 VC could be a very nice lens and if our hopes are right, you will probubly get it for an even swap compared to the 24-105, then you'll have f/2.8 AND VC...

This is what im waiting on too. But if the 24-700mkii comes out like the 70-200mkii, prime like sharpness, its gonna be harder. If the tamron can compare to the 24-70mki, then i will probably just stick with that, assuming the price between tamron and 24-70mkii is significant. But if its only $300-400 difference, and the iq is significant and justified, then i might just suck it up and get the mkii.

I would simply wait till end of April. Both Tamron and the new Canon will be tested, and you can make your conclusion.

What I can tell you as an owner of the old 70-200L f2.8 IS Mark I which is newer than 24-70 Mark I is that when the mark II came out, alot of people had this type of talk and question. The simple answer was the Mark II was a lot better and alot of fokls asked how that could be.

The 24-70L II will most likely be the same according to the MTF charts. People will deny and come of with justifications but in the end they simply won't have the best IQ.

That's the worst reason I've heard ever.

Mark I is awesome already and The Mark II has better IQ but I'd rather go for primes if you want the best IQ?

If your looking for the 24-70 Workhorse lens and a better one has come out with better IQ, why wouldn't you buy it?

If money is no objection then buy 24-70 MK I now, then get the Tamron 24-70 and then get the 24-70 MK II when it comes out. And sell the ones you don't like.:)

If its a choice between the MkI and the MkII, I'd get the tamron.
