I need to send my 28mm f1.8 in for service. It doesn't always stop down at time of exposure, shooting wide open instead. Being in SoCal my inclination is to send it to Arizona. Anyone have experience with that facility, or would I be better off sending to New York?

Send it to New York. I've had a pretty good experience with them, although they're not quick with turn-around time. Took me probably two weeks.

My experience with service was during holiday times and all the centers were backed up. I live in Chicago so it was no brainer I send it to Chicago location but after 8 business days later still they have not looked at it, it pissed me off and I asked the lens back. Send it to Arizona location and I was waiting for an estimate with in 5 days actually estimate came the day after they received the lens and they shipped it back in a week.
They do charge shipping and somehow it was EXPENSIVE. Maybe with the insurance etc.? But if I am paying $320 for a repair and shipping it to them, its kinda weird to pay $30 ground shipping to Chicago.
Anyway, NY could be the busiest but if you send it to any other location and a part is needed, it comes from New York. Also pay attention to the working hours! Chicago location works half day and they service 2-3 other brands also.
If you are close to Arizona, send it there. Otherwise I heard good things about New York.

When sending in for service did you send the lens in its case and original box, or send it in loose.

I sent mine in with the lens case as well, to the Ronkonkoma center. The quote me the cost of repair and S&H. But since it's not worth it, i told them to send the lens back to me. They didn't charge me for shipping. Weird. :S

I sent my 60d, 60d battery, and the 30mm lens attached to the body with the lens cap. I had someone at the UPS store pack it. I also put the online service request paper and my amazon receipt in the box. I didn't send in the 30mm box, lens hood, or memory card for fear that it would be missing when the camera returned. I paid extra for ins. as well. They pay for shipping back to you and required a signature at delivery.
