to take to NYC along with my 7D. I'm thinking I may not want to carry the gear around 'all' the time. I appreciate any recommendations.
Thanks, janie

yep ^^

take a look at the different feature lists, depending on budget you might be happy with the s95 or even the s90 and they are comparatively very cheap right now with the the closeout sales and people moving up to s100's. I see slightly used s95's in the for sale here a lot lately.

I was thinking about the s100. Other than the obvious smaller size, would you recommend it over the g series? And if not, which g would be the best bang for the buck?

I would recommend it over the G series, because it is truly lightweight. I have the G11 and love love love it. But it's not small and if small is a primary concern, it stays home.

And you take your 7D instead? Sorry, I'm a bit puzzled by your response on this. Surely you have a G11 because it's smaller than your dSLR?

The S100 and S95 are very compact and get great reviews.

FWIW I recently went through this and ended up with a G12, which I really like. For me it's small enough, fits in a coat pocket no problem. Shooting modes, ISO, exposure compensation dials and a few other controls are to hand. The swivel screen is very useful for a number of things and I can use the viewfinder when need to do that (I need my reading glasses to see the screen if it's closer to me than 18 inches). Finally the construction feels more solid to me compared to the S100 and S85.

The S95 is probably the best bang for buck, but with the launch of the G1-X, I would expect the G12 to be discounted soon.

From an image quality viewpoint from the reviews I've seen, probably not a huge amount in it between the G11, G12, S85 and S100. Get whatever you're most comfortable with as a camera.

I recently made that decision for travel purposes and got the G12. It was on sale for only $30 more than the S100 with waaaay more capabilities (like an optical viewfinder and flash shoe). As for carrying a camera, the S100 is light and small but are you really going to put a camera in a coat pocket, one that won't hold a G12? I always travel with a backpack which will accommodate a G12 and 270EX flash nicely.

I use a Tenba sling bag for my 7D and have my G9 in a small ThinkTank bag that's velcro-wrapped around the sling's strap. The assembly works perfectly when strapped in, but when I take the bag off my back, I have to be careful of the smaller bag, as it can get easily knocked around.

It really depends how you'll actually be using and carrying the camera. The G series is very compact compared to an slr but the image quality isn't substantially better than the s90, 95, 100 from what I gather with online samples.

The big difference for me is that I can easily fit the s95 in my pocket so it goes everywhere that I go. Even though the G cameras are still small, it's a stretch to call them pocket sized so I wouldn't use it nearly as much. If you're putting it in a backpack or a purse or something most of the time I don't think you'd see a lot of difference.

I went with the S95. None of the G series will fit in a jean pocket, so to me, they were useless for what I wanted. If they couldn't fit in a pocket then I had to constantly carry them, and then I may as well be hauling around the 7D.

I have an xti and a 7D. A couple of years ago I picked up a G10 but eventually sold it
and later on got an S95 for the simple reason that the S95 always fits in my pocket.

I think that is the test. Will the camera fit in jeans/pants/shorts pocket? Anything G series fails that test for me, although I'm sure someone has some cargo pants with large enough pockets...

For me, I would buy a pair of cargo pants just to have the articulating screen.
