The USS Iowa is currently in Richmond (CA) Harbor for restoration work, prior to a permanent move to San Pedro for exhibition. It's open weekends for visitors. Right now one can walk on the foredeck. Soon, I'm told, the bridge will be open for visitors. Latest word is that it will remain in Richmond until "April or May".

One of the best parts of visiting this battleship is the opportunity to talk to veterans who served on this ship, or similar. Range of largest guns = 24+ miles. 3,000 men served at a time, from World War II up until the Gulf War.

Nice shots. Did you have a friend that works on the ship to let you on board. I've been wanting to take more shots of the U.S.S Hornet in Alameda, CA but didn't have a chance yet.

The Iowa is open to the public on weekends while it is in Richmond. I watched them tow it in a few months ago. It's really a neat thing to see in person.

Here are a few more from yesterday and one from a couple of weeks ago. Yes, it is open to the public on weekends. They ask for a donation of $10 per adult and $5 for kids. In addition to the ship, there is a small exhibit area. The movie showing the history of the Iowa is worth watching while you're there.

More info on the Iowa restoration project can be seen at this link (external link).

I'm looking forward to the day when it sails out of the SF Bay under the Golden Gate Bridge. I'll definitely try to be there with my camera for that.

Some nice images in here. She's particularly impressive firing a full broadside (check out the first image in the Wiki article!).

In the first image, notice in the water how the whole ship is sliding to our right from the recoil.
