Anyone else own a Belgian Shepherd?

This is my three and a half year old Groenendael called Ivy. Ivy is my first Belgian and she's amazing and extremely loyal.

I had never heard of the breed before I started looking for a dog in 2008 and stumbled across the BS and I'm now I'm hooked.

Wow, beautiful dog! You'd have to be careful she's not mistaken for a black wolf!

Wow... beautiful dog - tempting. :)

I have a black lab/great pyrenees mix, so she's pretty wooly and a kind of big girl (she ended up a bit small, on 75-80 pounds, thank goodness (must be there was a small lab in the mix). She's a lovely girl and has also been very protective. Do Belgian shepherds do similar duty to Pyrs?

I like to push buttons on thingies that take pictures. Sometimes I like to push other buttons, too.
I only bite on the second Tuesday of every week, usually only mean people - they kinda taste like chicken...

She is often called a black wolf and some people are scared of her, as she has that wolf look in her eyes.

Belgian Shepherds are a herding breed, apart from the Malinois, which is mainly used in police work. There are four dogs that are under the Belgian Shepherd name. All the same dog, just look a bit different.

I'll add some more photos but she can be hard to photograph, due to her blackness but the 550 is making it a lot easier!

Thank you to all of the comments, she really is a stunning girl :)

Using my 60mm macro on Ivy. I am really impressed with this lens, currently my favourite to use.

This was also taken with natural sunlight.

Also meant to add, rick_reno, hehe at the car proofing. It works well and keeps all of the sand to one section of the car. We got to the beach quite a lot. The joys of living in Australia.

I'm surprised no one else [yet] owns a Belgian Shepherd!

Man she looks a lot like Eva. Eva only weighs about 55 pounds and has some brown on her paws. How much does Ivy weigh?? Great looking dogs and I have never had a more loyal dog.

Ivy is around 44 pounds. I have to convert that as we use kilograms here in Australia.

The German Shepherd in Eva must give her the extra weight. She sure does sound like a Belgian Shepherd :)

Beautiful Dog

All of the Belgian Shepherd breeds are amazingly intelligent. loyal and beautiful. They are also quite formidible in appearance and even a very gentle dog will deter human agressors simply by its looks and demeanor.

Black dogs are difficult to shoot, especially with the sky as a background. I have found that using fill flash outdoors provides some definition in the coat, balances the exposure better and also provides fill light. I most often use my fill flash dieect with about a -1/2 stop FEC.

When shooting in a studio type environment, I like cross lighting (one on each side of the dog) which will provide highlights and depth. I will usually shoot the two lights with a stop of exposure difference.

If I shoot with a single flash indoors, I will bounce off the ceiling and use a Joe Demb Flash Diffuser Pro ( www.dembflashproducts.com (external link) ) to modify the flash.

Additionally, when shooting a black dog, the camera's meter will try to turn it into gray so a bit of under exposure is lin line...

I have Belgians, of the Malinois variety. Who do protection sports but also herd, there is still plenty of herding instinct in the Malis. First dog is Nexxus when she was a youngster, the second dog is Cali who was a couple weeks shy of 12 when the photo was taken. Both have done protection sports and herding, along with obedience, agility, flyball, conformation and other stuff. It's a very versatile breed :-)

They sure have that distinctive face, don't they. .. I really like that last shot !
Malndobe, you weren't by chance at the dog show in Del Mar a few weeks ago (end of April) were you?
I saw both the Belgian Shepherds and Malinois walking around. (we were vendors.. so didn't get to see much of the show ring action) .. They are beautiful dogs.
