RAW Uploading Problems

I started shooting in RAW yesterday for the 1st time with my EOS 20D. I have been having problems uploading my pictures from the camera to the computer. The computer would not recognize that there were any images on the CF in the camera at all. I was able to view the CR2 thumbnails using the EOS Viewer Utility, but it would not allow me to upload or doing anything with them. I plugged the CF in my SanDisk card reader, but the computer said that the CF needed to be formatted. I am at my wits' end. Help, please!!!

Have you got another card you can try? that a card reader isn't seeing the data you've recorded is a little disturbing.

If the card reader isn't working, it could be the that the data on the card somehow got scrambled.. Or the card is faulty... As Jon suggests.. Try another card....

If you put the card back in the camera can you see the images ? If not, the card has become corrupted somehow.

I can see the images via EOS Viewer Utility. I pop in another card and it also said that the other card needed formatting. I think you are right...the problem could be with the card reader. I will get another reader tomorrow and try again. Thanks a lot!

If you had an older EOS camera (D30, D60, 10D, 300D) upgrade the software to what came with the 20D.

Thank you for your feedbacks. I tried many things but nothing has worked, so far. I checked my EOS software and found that it was the latest version. I formatted my spare CF card on the camera, shot a few pictures using RAW formt (CR2), but neither my software packages (Digital Photo Pro, Raw Shooter Essentials 2005 and ACDSee 8...I checked and confirmed that each of them had the capability to handle RAW file format) would recognize that there were any images on the camera, nor the card reader could register any info on the CF card. I shot pictures using the combined JPG and CR2 formats, but the EOS Capture would recognize only the JPG files and not the CR2 files...the card reader could not read anything on the card (except to say that the card needed to be formatted). I shot pictures using the full JPG format...both the camera and the card reader uploaded fine. I am stumped. I am starting to think that there is something wrong with the software of my camera. I am thinking about taking the camera to the Canon Service Center to have them check it out.

I checked the Canon website and downloading the latest version of drivers and viewer utility. Still no luck. But I discovered that I have a real early version firmware. I will download the latest firmware to see whether this will make a difference. The Service Center will be my nxt destination if I still do not have any luck!

This sounds a bit like your software didn't get installed completely on the computer. The full programs are probably there, but the software drivers that allow the .CR2 files to be utilized are not installed. Similar software drivers allow .JPG files to be read, but those are easy. Your software installation was supposed to have enabled the .CR2 files also, but if that didn't get completed, your symptoms show.

I have now tried everything that I know...I loaded new, most up-to-date drivers on my computer and the latest firmware on my camera, I checked out the card reader, I purchased and tried a new CF card. My computer is still unable to recognize CR2 files on the CF card. The only thing I can do now is to take my camera into the Service Center and ask them to take a look.

Perhaps try formatting the cards with your camera instead of with your card reader. Then try to download from cards formatted this way. Could be a longshot, but, still worth a try.

I got stuff for taking pictures. :o When things are unclear - It's time to refocus.

Tried that also but didn't work, either. Thanks for the suggestion!
