Do you guys know what sort of max focusing distance the 150mm would have with a 25mm extension tube?

I voted the 100L because its such a nice lens in general aswell, and for general use IS is very handy. It also steadies the viewfinder/liveview a little when you're right up close with things - that helps.

For macro alone, I would have voted the non-L macro if it were an option. That and a flash + flash bracket + kenko tubes set.

Don't shoot bugs with it but have done many plants/flowers. IS can be helpful in tricky situations. Also like L series glass.

Note: I also own 180L.

The Sigma has all of those features plus one the Canon doesn't - longer working distance.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

Having had one, I think the 100L is a fabulous lens but imo it's a bit short for macro. You might want to try the 180L instead.... it allows the camera to be twice as far from the subject.

The ZE 100/2 MP is also excellent and takes extension tubes well (although it's 1:2). Your choice will depend a lot on how close you really want to get.

Several cameras and more glass than I will admit to.

I voted 150 OS. I find that my 100-non-L is even too close on crop, and on my 1D II...nope.
I drool for a 180 OS; my next macro will be the Siggy 150 OS or 180 OS.

I had a 100mm f/2.8 (prior to the advent of the L) years ago and used it with film and found it universally excellent (as it was on a crop DSLR but even more so on the full frame of film) as an excellent general purpose lens (I shot really tight at the time), portrait lens, and of course for Macro work ...

I take it you weren't the person who lifted a pre-production copy of the 180OS at CES.

LOL..no, how bad was it?

I generally use the 1.4x tc on my 100 for macro.

As far as I know it hasn't resurfaced yet, here's the story on it.

However, I didn't really find the 100mm focal length useful on a crop body, which is similar to the FOV I would get with the 150 on FF.

what makes you think that you'll like a 100mm field-of-view then?

or are you just getting a macro lens just for the sake of it?

I'm not interested in the... 5D3/X.

i wouldn't speak too soon. i for one, have been staunchly refusing to buy the 5D II in view that its not worth the upgrade from the 5D. i'm upgrading only when the 5D III is out.

I have a 50D, so a 5D2 would go well with it. I do not want to spend the money on a 5D3.

I wouldn't buy a macro lens just for the sake of having it. I really enjoy macro photography and would like a lens that will take advantage of what the 5D2 sensor offers. I liked my old 100 non-L macro, but I want something with IS and preferably a longer MFD.

Looks like the Sigma would be the better choice for me, despite all of the Love for L. Got a while longer to think about it though.

The 180 OS ought to be out any time now, you might want to look at that too if it's not too much more than the 150. The 180L is fantastic on the 5D2 but no IS and you have to have a lot of light or really bump up the ISO.
