OK I have to ask, why do some people keep the boxes from paper, ink, CF cards, batteries, etc?

i was thinking the same thing... i can understand boxes from lenses and bodies but CF cards or paper??? why? do you plan on selling the empty paper box once you are done using it?

I'm guessing this question is partially directed towards me lol. Those paper/ink boxes are all still full.

I keep the SanDisk "software" (recovery, etc.) in the original box(es) so I keep my CF card boxes.

I've never been able to see the value of keeping boxes past the expiration of the camera or lens warranty. I rarely sell my used gear and since I live in a 950 square foot house with my wife, three cats and a dog, I just don't have the room. the last cameras I sold, I did through consignment at the local camera store and the greater bulk of my old Manual focus film gear was donated to one of the local high schools.

If I were to buy a used lens or camera from another person, I wouldn't care whether they had the original box or not. I'd be concerned whether the item was in the condition represented by the seller. The original box has no bearing on that.

I certainly understand if you rarely sell your gear, but I think you're in the minority....making you unique:)

If you don't plan on selling your gear then keeping the box has little added value. But a if you do, then having a box and the paperwork, etc. definitely helps the resale value.

Think about it... You can sell an L for nearly what you bought it for. Not too shabby!

I'm sorry, but still I fail to see how having the original box improves the resale value of a lens or body. If you're basing a purchase on whether the seller has the original box, then you're deluding yourself. The guy could have been terrible at taking care of his gear and the lens might be trashed, but as long as he has the original box, it's a good sale? I don't think so. The only possible value I could see is in having something to ship it in, but that's not a big deal. Most shipping stores will pack the stuff better than Canon ever did in the first place.

As far as being able to sell an L lens for almost what one paid for it, that's silly. Would any of you buy my 100-400 IS L, purchased in 1999, for anything close to the $1700 I paid for it? I doubt it, especially since new ones cost $1400 at B&H. If I wanted to sell that lens, I'd be happy if I got $1000 for it, especially as old as it is.

instead of arguing, just try it. i have bought and sold way over $50k in the past year or so and i can tell you right now, that the small details like box and manuals are what makes the sale quicker and bring you a bit more money.

and as for your second point, again, try it instead of saying that it is silly. in the past month i have sold about lenses all for almost exactly what i paid for them or even a bit more. the beauty of buying a in-demand item used is that you can use it and if you don't like it, sell it for exactly what you paid for it or even a bit more if you are lucky.

Not meaning to single you out. But your post did make me finally ask the question. I've seen other people posting pics with these types of boxes and really wondered why anyone would save them.

I see we're neighbors.

The only thing I've seen which I don't get is why people post pics of CF card boxes or even the plastic, pending which type you get. There's nothing there to keep and selling them with that, i only wonder why they still have it...

Yeah, I'm with you... Little knick knacks like that I toss. No sense keeping those.

At the current moment I have no idea where my boxes are, I am guessing that they are somewhere in my room. The movers came and packed my room today when they were supposed to. They wouldn't listen to my mom, and I was in New Orleans for science bowl.

Has anybody else noticed that despite the thousands of dollars invested in camera equipment, most of the photos of the boxes are just plain lousy? Out of focus, poor backgrounds, needing color correction, no level horizontals, etc.
