Hyper Synch - going loopy!

I have spent 2 days reading stuff of Pixel Kings and Radio Poppers and my brain is officially maxed out (normally takes about 30 seconds:oops:) I have 1 question, but first let me tell you what I want..

I want Higher speed synch flash for sunset photographs so I can light a Bride and Groom with flash and be using about 1/500 of a second.

Now then, there is HSS and hypersynch =HSS gives weaker flash output. IFAIK Hyper synch (manual is OK) will give you a full power blast timed to give correct exposure even on a 5D2 that I have.

Question - does the Pixel king cut it or does the Radio Popper? Hope a brighter person than me can get me thinking straight again??
Thanks
Geoff

No "Hypersync" is specific to Pocketwizard Flex/Mini...
http://www.pocketwizard.com …hnology/hypersync_fpsync/ (external link)

But you won't get full-power sync at 1/500" on the 5D Mk II even with the PW FlexTT5.

I have the PW flex/mini... I can get 1/500" hypersync on my 1D Mk3, but not on my 5D2... still get the black band at the bottom of the frame from the shutter curtain.

The full-power burst can sometimes be used with slow duration monolight strobes (pseudo-hypersynch hack), but they're really just using the tailing edge of the burst to provide fading light to the bottom of the frame.

I don't understand...what's the point of hyper-sync if you still have the sky blown all to hell? Stop down some or put an ND filter on or something.

Fully backlit, early afternoon. To bring any kind of detail to the sky, the entire background, other than the sky, would be black.

Randy take a shot of a blank wall indoors with your Ab1600 and at 1/800 and then we talk. Now maybe latest PW firmware does some more tricks. I only used 5.xx versions. OP is saying flashes from what I gather not Ab strobes. If I was using AB strobes I don't know why would I need HSS or mini/flex anyways. Here is one with 3 stop ND filter.

If I had more power than my AB800 I could get the bg more darker. Here I had only 1/125 ss. Add mini on Tx side and plus II on Rx side and on crop camera you can be easily at 1/500 to knock that ambient more. With 5d, I couldn't get past 1/320 with HyperSync alone. This was with AB800 and 550ex/580exII.

All reasons that the black bar from too fast of sync speed does not show up. These images prove nothing. Do what Bobbyz suggests and then come back.

Sounds like the sky shouldn't be in your composition then.

Come on guys settle down! Anyway, we seem to be getting in to a debate with Pocket Wizards here I am afraid I have discounted them and am looking seriously at Radio Poppers - any one out there with 5D2 and RP's??

From what I know RP doesn't do hypersync, only HSS as RP works on existing canon protocol.

'Wanting' to use 1/500s - why? If its because your flash isn't powerful enough, get a more powerful flash.

HSS won't increase the relative output of your flash, but Hypersync might. Only PW's will allow peak hypersync which is what you're needing -so you have little choice amongst radio triggers unless you're familiar with the HSS 'hack'? This will retain ratio of your flash/ambient to a certain point or at best maybe give you +1 stop more at 1/8000s with the right flash, but this is only STILL going to give you the same result at 1/500s as it would at 1/250s.. so why do you need 1/500s ?

Photographersworldwide, thanks for the reply, I want a faster shutter speed to kill the ambient light at sunset. I am familiar with the hack but have been informed it does not work with the 5D2.
