I have a non Canon flash and am able to shoot at 1/1600 and any aperature that the lens will support at a given focal length.

Combined with the sensor of the G1X,
that could prove to be a killer combo
for those who seek high sync speeds,
putting their DSLR's away in storage.

Does the LCD screen go "blank" on shutter button half-press like the G12? See my complaint and description about the G12 at http://lightdescription.blogspot.com …ompatibility-problem.html (external link)

Gordon, I don't remember. I'll play around later tonight and reply back. I was messing around with that flash on a couple of dslr's too and I don't remember what behaved like what.

Flash update.

First off I was wrong. You can use flash up to 1/3200 of a sec. I changed the aperture and realized that I could then increase the shutter speed. Last night I only used 5.6, but tonight when I changed the aperture to f14, it let me use 1/3200 which seems counter intuitive to me, but I'm NO flash expert.

Gordon as to your question about the blackout. Once focus does lock, the screen goes black. So there is know knowing how things look until you take the photo. I guess focus and recompose is out too, unless you use the optical view finder.

Aauurrgg, I was afraid that the G1X would act like the G12 with a non-Canon flash and it appears to do so. The screen blanking is a problem for me with focus and recompose using non-Canon flash attachments. I'll have to work around it.

About the sync speed, here's how I explain it to myself. The physical hole is smaller at f14 than at f5.6 therefore that f14 hole can be closed more quickly. There is probably some loss of effective flash power at 1/3200 because the duration of the flash is longer than 1/3200.

Thanks, that helps. Not having much flash understanding, I was totally thinking about it from the viewpoint of exposure.
