Here are some shots from last nights display. It has been so overcast and cloudy here the last few days that even the helicopters had to turn around and go back to Fairbanks. Yet last night it cleared up for about 2 hours around 10:30 pm and the lights came out to play.

Some really nice pictures of the Northern Lights. Only saw them once in my life around here.

Thanks everyone, When I am not working the night shift. My co-workers who are on the night shift have the standing order to call me anytime the lights are out and it is looking good. Glad you guys like them.

If you come in late Feb early March and plan on staying in the Fairbanks area, then yes you would have a good chance on seeing them with some good planning, and some luck.

Here is almost the best location in the Fairbanks area to really get a good view of them and to stay at. It is 20 miles North of Fairbanks. So you really do not get the interference from the city lights. And it is really a unique lodge with great people.

Mid to late March isn't too late in the season, granted they may not be out every night and it all depends on the solar flare and the geomagnetic activity which are some of the main things that cause the aurora (I am not an expert on what causes them, so I may be wrong on that) Here is a picture I took last year on March 13, 2011. Taken with my T1i and kit lens.

While there definitely is a "season" for auroras, ie they are more likely to be visible during spring and fall, they can be seen at any time of the year if the conditions are right. Two of the best displays I've ever seen have been right in the middle of summer. One in late July, one in early Aug.

This one was in May:

This one was in August:

The last one there from August was from one of the best nights I had seen. I spent it on a pontoon boat with friends, and by the time I got dropped off at my cabin, it had definitely died down. I took that picture on my dock, and with a little wave action, the focus is a bit off.
