I have only heard positive feedback about the 50 1.4 so you should enjoy this very much! I decided to go with the 85 1.8 and keep my nifty fifty. I also picked up the 35 1.4 and really enjoy this focal length. I recomend you pick up the 85 when your budget permits and in the future if you find yourself needing a little more room with your 50 look at the 35. I can't vouch for the f/2 version but I think the 1.4 is worth every cent I paid for it.

Thanks. Have heard the same about the 35 f1.4 (and that's a lot of cents). Now I could see packing the 85 f1.8 and 35 f1.4 in the same bag for the day. Maybe I'll also need a bigger bag? Next XMAS, this year's all tapped out. Hmmm, then it'll be between better lenses or upgrading to 5D.... (Or, just saving more money and getting both)

I couldn't decide, so I bought both the 50/1.4 and the 85/1.8 this weekend. After a day with both, it's a tough call. The 1.4 is indeed a whole different beast than the 1.8.

The 85 is a great lens (hey did I say that before?)

Good call! Maybe I can squeeze in another purchase before these rebates fade. Or; if the 24-105 works out, sell my super duper copy of the Tamron 28-75 for it.

Like they said about adding the 50 1.4(which you actually did), you can add the 85 1.8 later. If you want, you don't have to necessairly order from B&H.

Use www.pricegrabber.com (external link). It'll find you other stores besides B&H, like beach, buydig, digital discount foto, etc.

You'll love the 50 1.4.

So; you trying to say that with this lense, I'll be swimming in, ummm, swimsuit models like this one?

Nice DOF shots. Thanks for posting them. I think I'm more excited about this lens than the 24-105!

I'm sorry, girls might cost more than just the 300 dollars for the lens. Although if you wave your camera around girls, they might flock towards you.

Interesting, happier about the lens than the 24-105. I'm sure the 24-105 will be more often used, but the 50 will capture some good smiles. ;)

Yes, you cannot go wrong with the 85. I am really at this point using my primes more than my zoom (only have 1 left now)

The zoom is bitter-sweet. It'll be a real workhorse but I've been spoiled with an f2.8 zoom. The 50 f1.4 is a sure-fire winner all the way. No compromises, as long as the length works and I have the little puppy with me. Besides; the fewer decisions I have to make the better - and without the zoom a different length just isn't an option.

In part; that's one attraction for the f4 lens (fewer decisions). I know f4 and above, particularly with IS and quality glass, will have a lower percentage of OOF shots. f2.8 is just more difficult but has higher highs (DOF) and lower lows (OOF).

You may find the 50/1.4 to be bitter-sweet, too. If you think it's hard to focus reliably at f/2.8, then f/1.4 is going to present even greater challenge. But at least the autofocus will be faster and more accurate at the wider aperture.

If you can afford to keep the 50 1.8 and buy the 85 1.8 it would be a no-brainer for me. As was stated previously.

Thanks Rick.

I had the 135 f2.0L for a while and did find that difficult to focus - Not expecting the 50 f1.4 to be as difficult. Mainly, it was a matter of being less cavaleer about shooting - I actually had to take care and be deliberate. I think the enforcment of being more deliberate on each shot is a positive exercise.

Haven't found my 50 f1.8 troublesome unless the lense actually misses it's mark (on a stationary subject usually) - not too common but often enough to cause frustration. Ergo; this upgrade.

Thanks. The 50's in the mail already. However; as stated above, I'm opting for the better 50 to decrease my equipment failure excuses. The 85 f1.8 has been on my wish list for a while, and considering it's low price, will probably be in my bag within the year. Next round.

Like a party that's best to leave while it's fun, or an audience that's best left wanting, I'll leave this purchase on the wish list for now.

I occassionally take product shots (window coverings), so a 50 suits that a little better. The Tamron Zoom has filled that need well up to now, but a nice wide lense may have to be next.

I'm sure your work is better off for it. I most often am chasing kids around the park so a good zoom + 1 prime suits me. Having options for those lone afternoons when "daddy's off taking pictures" will be the next pursuit. For that; I see mostly primes as a worthy goal.
