Dennis,

That is a very thorough review. Thanks for posting the link. At this point, I think my next move will be to add a DSLR sometime this year, if funds allow. I'm still researching the options from both Canon and Nikon. I'm hoping I'll figure out a way to fund a full frame camera but time will tell.

Again, thank you for the efforts you put forth to make the G threads so fine.

Kim,

I see you've added lots of toys for your G12. And, now you want to go for the big guns with a FF kit. You must be young, since you will need the strength to carry the heavy stuff. I did that decades back with film gear. Now I'm downsizing to somewhat less weight and bulk. My G11 is my preferred tool, but I'm still evaluating my NX100 to see whether I'm really interested in mirrorless models. The NX100 is small enough with the 30mm/f2.0 pancake lens, and produces excellent images. However, it's difficult to stay at one focal length. I do have a couple other lenses, for now. Be careful with a DSLR, especially a FF, and the cost and size of lenses. But, enjoy what you want while you can.

I purchased this camera on the basis of some of the review.
I wanted a semi pro compact that had the following criteria:
1) A fixed lens because I did not want another lens collection
2) A viewfinder with a rotating screen
3) Top manual controls without the need to go into sub menus
4) Large enough to avoid fiddly buttons.

The Sony and Samsung did not match up, only in image quality perhaps.

Canon 5D mk3, 50mm 1.4, 17-40L, 70-200L, 100-400L, Canon 100L macro, Canon 2 x G1X, Speedliite 430 EX all supported by Gitzo and Benro.

Dennis,

I have to say.... I'm no longer young. I'll be 59 in May. I won't add a grip to either the Nikon 800 or Canon 5D III or whatever it's called. I'm in decent shape for an old guy, but I do appreciate the suggestions. I will have to use Best Buy to try out the weight, etc. or else drive a few hours to a real camera shop. We no longer have one here in Gainesville, FL. We'll see if I can handle the weight. I use a tripod a lot, even with my G12 and have a monopod that I haven't used yet. But your concerns are valid and I appreciate the advice.

We had a great one but the owners of the place they were leasing raised their rent high enough that they had to close their retail shop. They still do prints and have Promaster stuff, but no longer have any high end anything. It's a shame.... and a sign of the times. He said, he could match pricing but the sales tax was enough differential that most people came in for advice and then bought at Amazon, B&H or Adorama.

The times they have already changed.

One of these days they will do something about the internet purchase sales tax thing. I do it too, but it is bad for the small town shops trying to stay in business.
