A friend and I braved the weather and snowshoed up to Lake Haiyaha in Rocky Mountain National Park last Saturday. The lake has a couple of very interesting winter characteristics: the water continuously drains from the lake so a couple months after the lake freezes the ice falls since it can't support its own weight. The other is that the ice is cyan blue in color which really stands out in certain light, especially when an edge is visible.

As always any comments or suggestions are always encouraged.

Wow...Love the blue ice Jon!

Haven't been to Lake Haiyaha since well before the snow started to fly! Now you're inducing a desire to snowshoe up there sometime soon (will have to wait til March).

#1, #3 & #4 are pretty cool. :)

Wow... beautiful, Jon. I was surprised after our blizzards at how blue snow can be. :)

I like to push buttons on thingies that take pictures. Sometimes I like to push other buttons, too.
I only bite on the second Tuesday of every week, usually only mean people - they kinda taste like chicken...

Outstanding shots, Jon. I had never heard all this, but will likely never be there in winter. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments guys and wuzzi!

Wuzzi, yours is the best nickname I've heard in some time!

Pete, Out of everyone of the lakes we've been to since they've frozen over this year, Haiyaha is the one I would recommend the most. The ice is very unique and spectacular. I was told by some friends who've been going up there for years that in about a month the warmer days will cause the surface to melt and the blowing snow will begin to stick covering the blue for the year. Nows the time to go if you're going to.

Damn! I've got a trip to Durango/Telluride scheduled for this weekend, a huge project the following weekend (maybe take a day during the week and go up [hmmm! :D]) and then a trip to Moab the weekend after that.

Might have to see if I can make that mid-week trip happen on 2/29
