I've been considering getting a photovest, for when I might just want to take a regular day-backpack or hike and still want access to my photo gear, especially whilst on the move (one can't get to filters or flashes or cards fast when they are in the backpack).

I've seen (and been impressed by) http://www.thevestguy.com/product.asp?id=10286 (external link) products (even though I'm in the UK so get stung by postage costs) though even on that one site alone there is a massive range of options and variations and that's without considering competing brands/options.

So I'd be interesting in hearing other peoples thoughts and how you use your photovests to best effect.

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

I use a Lowepro harness and utility belt, which serves the same purpose and can hold a varied number of pouches.

Domke Jacket (sleeves zip off when it's warm; shove a fleece under it and it's good down about as cold as I'm willing to tolerate while actively photographing things (around 20F with the right fleece).

I picked up a Columbia PFG Fishing Vest
http://www.amazon.com …TF8&qid=1329255980&sr=1-1 (external link)
and have been very pleased with it. The large pockets on each side easily hold a 55-250 size lens. I had originally put some added padding, but after using it a few times decided I didn't need it because I'm not crawling over/around stuff when I'm shooting.

I think most of the vests I've seen are pretty much the same.

I use a Matin, here was my review post

https://photography-on-the.net …1187&highlight=matin+vest

the most distinguishing feature is the large rear pocket, this help balance the load, if you put a long lens in there, it stop the vest from feeling really front heavy.

Inexpensive but effective. I also use it when I fly to carry on about 100 lbs.

I gave up on my photo vest years ago and moved to a belt system by Think Tank much more flexible and customizable and not as hot specially here in Florida. I still have a Domke vest from the 80's which has be relegated as cover garment when shooting in pistol matches. So if I were to buy a new one I would have to go with Domke again.

Domke also, worked well for me and has held up for a few years.

I use the Aqua Design Travel Lite Fly Fishing vest (http://www.aquadesign.com …ing-vest-travel-lite.html (external link)). It hold quite a bit of stuff (no big lens pocket tho). The mesh shell breathes as well as a vest can, which is important to me. The pockets have no liner between the mesh, so if you sweat heavily, the items in the pockets will get wet. However, to be really effective, any liner would have to be waterproof, which would make it much less breathable. For $21 it's a nice vest.
