Am I going crazy?(yes, another gear recommendation thread)

Hey all,

Lately I've been going mad(well, crazy really, I'm not getting upset yet).


Currently using: 7D, 1Ds(dinosaur), 17-55IS, 70-200 IS2, and the old school minolta 50mm/1.2.

My desire is for epic amounts of super thin depth of field(or at least the ability to do so). Naturally, we can look to the 50mm F1.2.

However, I keep looking at the fuji X100. Will the X100 achieve reasonably thin depth of field?

thoughts? suggestions? (we will assume, that the total amount that can/may+shall be spent is roughly the used resale value of the current gear; keeping in mind the ability to trade things around)

Hahaha, the F1.ohhhhh. out of the price range, unless that becomes the ONLY lens I use.

Would I sell my canon stuff, If i could get my hands on a D3s, and the person selling somehow wanted a 7D and the 17-55 and the 70-200.... That could fly(not like the D3s is a bad camera either). I am fearing the price of any updates to the 35L that we get to use...

Wow...I never thought Voigtlander would become a major player/respected name in photography again...good on them, that sounds like an amazing lens!!! (I have some oldschool Voigtlander stuff...including a 1953 Vito B I love!)

New X-100 owner here. Considering the short focal length of its lens (23mm), the X100's DoF at f2 is decent. The OOF areas don't "blow me away," but you do get decent subject isolation, and the bokeh is pleasing enough.

So far, I am very pleased with this camera. Of course it has limitations, and more than a few quirks, but I thoroughly enjoy shooting with it, am impressed with the IQ I'm getting from a camera this small.

woww the OM-D looks so awesome. If I weren't so invested in Canon I'd seriously consider picking one up.

Firstly, If you're looking for "super thin depth of field," then you can forget a crop-sensor camera. You're going to want to go FF all the way.

On a FF camera, that 70-200ISv2 is going to have really nice DoF/bokeh @200mm/f2.8.

You have many f/1.2-f/2 options to choose from: any f/1.2L, f/1.4L, 135/2L, and even the 100/2 if you don't want to break the bank. The reason I'm been non-specific is because you haven't really mentioned what you like to shoot, focal-length-wise.

Yeah, I'm having to realize I'm in the grass is greener syndrome at times. Part of me wants to consider switching systems, and part of me says I'm already too heavily committed to what I've got. I didn't realize either that Voigtlander already has a 25mm f/0.95 in the M43 mount too. Given how I shoot, the 25mm might be a better fit for me than the new 17mm.

I'm really debating on trying the new OM-D with the new 12-50mm lens and pick up the voigtlander 25mm to go with it. But I'd like to see some hands-on reviews first. I'm trying to decide on any gear additions or changes before a trip we have planned for later in the spring, and I'd want several weeks to get comfortable with anything I might change.
