When I first arrived at the Great Blue Heron nests in the Viera Wetlands this morning, a male was in the nest. A few minutes later the female arrived and the male flew off. For the next 40 minutes I watched the male repeatably try to return to the nest, but the female keep chasing him away. I have never seen that behavior before.......

I am assuming that this male is an intruder and not her mate, thus the reason for her chasing him away.

Hi, I enjoyed looking at your shots today and have been looking around Fl for nesting birds like these. Today I watched Osprey building nests but no action like this. Great job

Very interesting. The SS must have been cranked up high to get these shots. They turned out great!

Very interesting set, Ira. You caught some neat behavioural shots. Just one question : How on earth do you tell a male from a female? That's something I've never picked up ;)
