Looking for a sling style bag that will fit the following:

-Rebel XS with 70-200 f/4 mounted with hood in shooting position
-18-55 kit lens
-50 f/1.8

That's all I'm looking to fit. Everything I've found so far that will fit a mounted 70-200 has space for a ton of other stuff that I don't need space for--is there anything that will fit that stuff without having space for 5-6 more lenses? I'm looking for something somewhat compact that will just carry the above stuff. I'm going to be shooting the Shell Eco Marathon team I'm a part of, and the shooting will consist of indoor convention center style stuff along with shots of our cars outside on the track. I already have a backpack that fits everything I have, I just need something comfortable that I can wear all day with the basics that I need.

My other thought is replacing my backpack with a backpack/sling hybrid like the Kata 3N1 series (which looks awesome). I use my 70-200 90% of the time, so it has to be mounted in the bag with hood in shooting position.

If I replace my backpack, I would be looking to fit all of the following:

-XS with 70-200 f/4 attached with hood in shooting position
-18-55 kit lens
-50 f/1.8
-2 Cactus V5 wireless triggers
-Pelican memory card case (6" x 2" x 1" approx)
-Vivitar 283 Flashgun
-space for rectangular Cokin P-sized filters
-filter holder plus adapter rings
-1 or two screw on filters
-battery charger, wired shutter release, other misc accessories including rocket blower
-Toshiba Thrive 10.1" tablet (preferrably dedicated pouch)
-ability to carry tripod

I'm thinking the Kata 3N1-33 (or 30 if someone can share how to fit a tablet into it) looks nice, but I don't know if there's anything else out there that is a hybrid backpack/sling pack camera bag. I'm not concerned with something that screams "camera bag" because I'm going to be carrying a tripod most of the time anyway.

I have a 3N1-22 - my ipad fits in just fine, with lots of room above/below it as well
I can pack the following:
5D2 gripped
24-70 mounted
70-200 2.8 II
above all in main compartment

3x430 EX II and 3x TT5 + 2X TT1/AC3 in the top compartment

the -22 definitely won't hold a 70-200 mounted with hood in the ready position - it might hold a 70-200 f4 with hood ready, but won't be mounted
aside from your 70-200 mounted requirement, I don't see why all your stuff wouldn't fit

Sadly having the hood and lens mounted is the highest priority. The 3N1s are comfortable though?

the only time I have a lens ready to shoot is when it's out of the bag... anything less, and it's not really ready to shoot...

It took a while for the straps to become comfortable... they were very stiff at first, but once broken in, they're not too bad with a heavy load

TT Retro 20 was made to hold a 70-200 attached with some room to spare. Check it out.

Thanks. I've had a messenger style bag before and I don't find them very comfortable. I'm really hoping there's a sling bag somewhere that will fit just what I want it to, but I can't find any.

Sorry. I have the retro 10 and 'sling' it cross shoulder. I find it 'all day' comfortable like that.

No apologies necessary, everyone has different likes and dislikes about bags. When I would sling my old messenger bag across my shoulder I would get a sore back really easily.

While the TT 20 will hold the body w/ 70-200 mounted, I'm fairly sure it won't be able to deal with the hood in shooting position and you've listed that as a "must do".

What's the overall length of your camera with the hood like that? I think that requirment is the one that's going to negate the vast majority of good ideas folks around here come up with.

I measured it last night and the total length of lens, hood, and camera all mounted is 12 inches exactly.

What I like is the M.A.S. attachable lens pouch system that you can add to it if you want to take along a couple more lenses without having to get a bigger bag.

Good luck!

Boy, I thought it was hard just to find a bag to fit an f4 (reversed hood) mounted on a 7D (non gripped). And you're looking for one that will fit a non-reversed hood? Let me know if you find it. My search has yielded similar results to yours, a lot of bags will fit but they're much bigger cuz they're designed to fit a lot more gear. I know you've stated you don't like messenger bags but the TT Retrospective 20 might fit your needs. Its external dimensions are 13 W x 12.5 H x 7 D and it'll fit a mounted 70-200/f2.8 (hood reversed). I'm sure you know that lens is an inch taller than the f4. Another option is the Kata 315, which is a sling that will fit the same kit, but I'm not sure about the non-reversed hood. That's going to be the hardest obstacle. Good luck with the search...and let me know what you decide to get (since I'm still looking myself).

I have the fastpack 250, very versatile and doesn't break the bank. http://products.lowepro.com …/Fastpack-250,2086,14.htm (external link) I just caught themounted hood comment, that'll be tough.
