Best for what?

If you want a camera that will fit in your pocket and have wide angle capability to 28 mm equivalent, the Canon S80 is one of the few in contention.

If you need a long telephoto lens with image stabilization, but it doesn't have to fit in a pocket, the Canon S2IS is worth looking at.

There is no best camera for all purposes.

I echo ScottE. Best for what?
- price;
- optical performance;
- size;
- available accessories;
- RAW files support;
- speed of operation (power-up speed, autofocus speed, read/write speed, fps);
- type of memory card used;
- zoom range;
- appearance;
- water proof;
- exposure control (and flash exposure control);
- various scene modes;
- bundle softwares;
- specific features like image stabilisation, change of aspect ratio;
- video mode;
- high ISO performance; etc.

There will be a compromise. Some of the above may be important to me (but may not be important to you). Try to be more specific to your need of best p&s camera.

I played with a sony f828, and it was darn nice...however, at the size/dimensions/price, it might as well be a dslr.

S80 is lovely. S2IS is alright, but I wasn't very impressed. What can I say, though...P&S is usually a "compromise" of sorts when you're used to a huge rig. I'm a big fan of the SD powershots, but they're only really nice for macro or simple snapshots. In that respect, though, they're awesome.

Gotta know what it's for. You looking for a dslr "substitute"?

Leica Digilux, or Panasonic equivelent. They are sort of pricey though, but have excellent optics.

I second the recommendation for the Canon S2 IS. I have a 20D, but if I were to purchase a P&S it would be this one. My friend has the S1 IS, and it's amazing!

I'd have to disagree with liza

S1 IS is horrible. Chromatic aberrations all over the place and it's too big for a point and shoot.

Well I was going to get a dslr but found out I cannot really afford yet... So i want to get a really nice point and shoot. I dont wanna do alot of macro or sports.

Still doesn't answer the question. What are you planning to shoot?

You want a DSLR but can't afford it.

What do you want a DSLR for? Are you planning to get a DSLR later when the prices come down?

It would really help me to help you if you would consider posting an answer longer than 2 lines. :)

I guess that's why Canon dealers can hardly keep them (or at least the newer S2) in stock! :rolleyes: :)

This question is like "what is the best car". There is no correct answer. Please narrow your question.

Ha, I was just thinking the exact same thing, "I'm gonna go on a Subaru WRX board and ask 'What's the best car to buy?'"

I think the best point in shoot from a 'jack-of-all-trades' perspective has not been released yet. But I have a feeling it's going to start with 'G' and end in '7'.

Contax T3, but there's no memory card slot inside.
