OK, I don't hate little brown birds. I just hate trying to identify little brown birds. I'm hoping our experts on LBBs will stop in and lend a hand.
Disclaimer #1 - I'm very new to monopod usage and therefore I stink.
Disclaimer #2 - The following pictures were taken using a monopod, and therefore they stink.
But that being said, I think the images below represent 2 new Sparrow species for me and I'm hoping for confirmation so I can continue "the chase". They do not look like the 2 species with which I am familiar: Chipping and White-throated Sparrows.
Thanks in advance for helping if you can - :)

I think the following 2 captures are of a first Winter White-crowned Sparrow. The second image is a closer crop of the first.

1.

2.

And now the real tough one (they're all tough for me) as I only got a glancing capture before it disappeared.
I'm thinking this one is a Song Sparrow.

I hope someone on this board w/better Sparrow ID skills than I have can help with the identification. Thanks for looking.

I believe that your first sparrow is a Field Sparrow. The white eye-ring is a good field mark for them, as well as their pink bill and legs. They are in the same genus as the Chipping Sparrow, so you should see the approximate same size and "build". A White-crowned Sparrow is typically larger and bulkier looking.

I agree that your second sparrow looks like a Song Sparrow.

Sparrow ID is a great challenge!!

Mark

I thought you just meant you hated trying to get a still shot of one of the little buggers :p

I'm about 75% that you're right with the White-crowned; and 95% that you're right on the Song...

Love the over the shoulder look you got with that last one :)

Yep, i love sparrow ID, or ID'ing sparrows. They are ground feeder. So, put some seeds on the ground and you'll get some good photos of them. ;)

Thanks Mark, I think you're right about the Field Sparrow. Funny, as much birding as I've done the striped crown drew my attention away from the eye ring. Now I know!

You oughta know me well enough to know I'm pretty good w/the little guys Eric - ;)
I think Mark's got it right about the Field Sparrow, but I appreciate your time and comments as always. I like the over the shoulder glance too.

It's a good thing you explained that you don't hate little brown birds, 'cause as much as I like you, Steve, then we would've been through! :) In the mean time I'm glad I'm not the only one having trouble telling which is which exactly. They are sweet though, aren't they? Well spotted, Steve.

Haha, thanks for not hating me Levina! I think LBBs give lotsa people fits....us included, but I like the little flocks they tend to stay in. It's funny that all I was trying to do was practice w/my monopod and out of 5 total shots taken 2 new species show up on closer examination. I guess I'll need to practice more w/my monopod! :)
