I was new to photography last year and have learned a lot from here since then. This lens was a Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6. My angle of shot was not the best due to the fence. I will also be picking up a NEW Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS this weekend. I hope my shots improve over last year and look forward to posting more often.

Thanks for looking.

When you take pictures through the fence, you should be 4-5 feet behind it. The most success I have is to turn the autofocus off. Then focus on the player you want to shoot. For most fences you shouldn't see the fence in the view finder. I've taken many of pictures through a fence, and you can't tell that a fence is in the way. The key to great sports shots is to make sure the ball is in the frame. My rule of thumb is to first have the players face, then ball must be in frame, and lastly the team logo or jersey, and cropping in tightly. Of course some pics won 't hit this criteria, but that's what I strive for with every shot.
