Have T1i, looking to upgrade to T2i, T3i, or 60D?

Wanting to upgrade my camera but not sure to what or if its even worth it. I like taking pictures of everything. Vacation, landscapes, sports, wildlife, etc. My current lenses are 17-55 f/2.8 and the 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS. I do take a video here and there, but I have an HD camcorder that I can devote to video but on occasion I will take a video clip.
My first thought was go to the T2i since it doesn't seem worth it to jump to the T3i due to the minimal difference then I read about the 60D and that has made me think that might be the best bet for me. I like the autofocus upgrade, the sensor upgrade, etc. Price looks like ($600, $800, $900) and I would try and sell the T1i to offset some of the cost although I'm not sure how much used T1i's go for but...

Any thoughts? advice? opinions?

What about the T1i makes you want to upgrade?

If you really do want to upgrade, I'd jump to the 60D rather than the T3i. The 60D is more than just a megapixel upgrade, and more than the commonly published additions. It may be a bit more money, but I really think that you get enough more than just a bigger body to be worth the difference in price. I traded in my T1i when I bought my 60D and maybe didn't get everything I could have out of the trade ($350 trade plus a spare battery for the 60D), but I also eliminated the hassle of trying to sell it.

THIS thread takes a detailed look at the differences between the T3i and the 60D. See if there is enough there to make it worth the cost.

I upgraded from a t1i to a 60d.
its a nice upgrade for sure.
but there is nothing massive about the 60d that will make your pictures better than the t1i.

I have seen lots of sport and wildlife pics (perhaps the hardest to take as light and subjects can not be controlled) from T1i users. The 15mp sensor is a great sensor.
I would stick with it unless you really want the higher FPS and battery life. The AF is nicer but not a total upgrade like a 7d is.

You should continue to practice and refine your skills. A new camera won't necessarily result in better pictures. Save money and buy new glass.

I went from a T1i to a 60D like so many others here. The better AF, ergos, and faster FPS was well worth it for me.

upgrading your camera body does not necessarily equate to "better" pictures. If you "don't know" why you need to upgrade, then you don't need to upgrade. just an opinion!

good luck

I still read that thread though! The T1i threads is one of the better camera threads on here. The 60D thread is a complete gong show at times. And to be honest more than a little weird.

I upgraded from T1i to 60D about a year ago. My primary reasons were:
1.) It can control external flashes
2.) dual wheel controls, this is huge if you use similarly designed film bodies
3.) larger body is easier to hold

I also got 'better metering'; I can't tell the difference.
Nine cross-type AF sensors. I use center only 99% of the time.
Faster burst mode. More unwanted shots to delete. Take the shot you want. Spraying and praying is time consuming when you get home.

After comparing the two cameras with a variety of lenses, I am convinced that Canon upped the ante with the AF on this camera. It seems to handle demanding situations better than the T1i does, with the same lens. This is really subjective, though. Maybe just wishful thinking.

BTW, I kept the T1i. It did not become a worse camera just because I bought a 60D. And I'll be hung if I'll sell and $800 perfectly good camera for $400. Never regretted buying the 60D or keeping the T1i.

Amen. It can go on for 2 pages without a photo being posted. And nothing really worth reading either.

Thank you very much everyone. This board is so helpful and such a great asset.
I think I will keep the T1i for now and practice my skills and work on things
like SportsDude and Meeko said.

I've been considering upgrading to a 60D as well. In addition to the points you raised, the newer sensor handles high ISO a bit better. For now, I'm waiting because the T1i is a nice camera and I don't "need" an upgrade. I'm hoping Canon will release a "70D" in the next couple years with a next gen sensor and an AF system at the 7D level, which would probably be an irresistible upgrade for me.

I have a T2i and a 60d. The T2i is great but I found that I just needed the extra features the 60d had. The 60d would probably keep you happier, longer :)

Personally, I have a 500D (T1i in the states AFAIK) and love it, you have some good glass - for instance the 17-55 f2.8 is one of the best examples of an EF-S lens out there, and there is a school of thought that the glass is more important than the camera. Sure the 60D has a few more features but do you reqlly need them yet?
How long have you been taking pictures? I've only had mine for a couple of years, but I seem to have used it more this year so far than I did last, I go out with it most weekends, I found that taking a load more pictures and trying different things have really helped to improve my images - that and reading the forums.
I've barely scratched the surface of what a 500D can do, look at some of the images in the T1i thread on the forum, they're brilliant and show me that I have a lot to learn to match them.

Noel
