Not the electronics, the internal switch works fine, the electronic component is fully operational. However the external switch housing just came detached in my hand, no falls or shocks. The external switch mechanism doesn't connect to the rectangular, silver internal switch, although the electronics seem fine.

Was anyone aware the protruding switch housing could simply come off? It must have caught on something that weakened it.

I get the feeling my wallet will hurt despite insurance.

To tell the truth, it is a bit worrying that the electronic component seems to simply be glued on to the mechanical outside switch and housing. One would expect slightly stronger construction from an L lens. However, the design is fairly old IIRC.

When you get this fixed, please post the cost. I'm curious what they get for something like this.

Nothing is broken as far as I can see, the adhesive seems to have simply failed. Probably to prevent damage to the electronics.

Some of the old versions had the switch fell off that's why the new ones have more flushed design, 70-200 f2.8 for example. I have yet one fell off one me (knock on woos) :)

They don't call it a "MF switch" for nothing...

Why not just glue it back yourself ?

Well, its going to take some defter hands than mine. And doesn't that void the warranty/insurance.

If it's an adhesive failure as you say and it's under warranty then you should have no costs.
