Got a bonus at work. After paying bills/credit cards off I have enough left to buy one of these...

Tamron SP AF70-300mm (external link)

Is there a different zoom lens in the same price range I should be looking at? Or another reputable site that has it cheaper?

it's a well received lens, and definitely a great price for what you get

Same lens I'm looking at, I'm hesitating at the moment as I don't qualify for the rebate and the Canon isn't that far off on price without the discount (and the cash availability thingie too).

Just yesterday ordered the same lens from ePhotoCraft. Would come to $338 after rebate. They are currently out of stock - seems like I've ordered one of their last ones - but I'd call them & see if they still give you that price & let you order it when they get them in. I haven't received mine yet, but Photo Craft had decent reviews and during my two phone calls they were very helpful & professional.

It is a really nice lens. Better than the Canon offering.

For the money you can't go wrong, I still use mine and often grab it when I want a light weight tele.

I like mine. I'm sure you can find it for less than what Adorama is advertising it for right now. For $400, its a good deal, for $338 its a steal!

That price seems to be the going price everywhere right now. Just get it as it is wellworth the coin.

I've had one for about a month, absolutely love it. I ummed and ahhed about the Canon as well but went for the Tamron as it was a newer design, had a 4 stop stabiliser and was a better price.

I considered the EF-S 55-250, but the Tamron seems like more lens (even though it's more money)

If you don't need the reach and would like f2.8, I'd recommend saving a little and getting the tamron 70-200 2.8. A very underestimated lens, but I had one for a couple months and it was fantastic.

I have both lenses and they each have there use, but you are right about the 70-200mm 2.8 being underestimated. I really do not know why it is notconsidered more for non sports use. For my purposes it is a fantastic lens; sharp, sharp with great isolation and bokeh.
