One of my favorite features of late that I missed on my G12 was step zoom.

The G1X has it. You assign it to the front dial and then you can step through 28, 35, 50, 85,100, 112mm in 35mm equivalent.

I really like this feature as I also shoot primes and I like to be able to replicate the focal length more accurately than just guessing what look close. It's also a great way to try out a focal length before you spend the money on a prime for your dslr or other interchangeable lens camera.

very cool. That is one of the things that irritates me slightly about my G12 also. That and the slower than molasses shutter lag.

Other than that, I love my G12.... I still think my upgrade path is a DSLR rather than a G1 X. I will keep the G12, of course.

Do you 1/2 press the shutter button to let the camera focus / compute the exposure then finish the shutter press to take the image?

That usually cures most people's complaints about shutter lag ...

Ha! Told ya!! Hey there Kim...

I wish my G did this. I don't own any DSLR zooms and when working with the G I hate not know exactly where I am!

n1as,

I do press the shutter button half way and usually shoot in AV, though I use manual quite a bit. When I'm shooting indoors, even with hitting the shutter button for focus... the screen goes dark after the shutter "fires" and says "busy".... then finally returns to the live screen. It's possible the Transcend class 10 cards I've used so far are the culprit.... Outside, it takes much less time.

Id,

I'm sort of waiting until the Nikon D800 is out and the first hand POTN reviews are in... along with the Canon 5D III (or whatever it ends up being called). I don't want to start out with a rebel, 60D or 7D, for some reason. I'd rather buy a FF and learn it well. I hope to stick with Canon, but the only thing I own that would keep me from buying Nikon is the 580EX II. It isn't nothing... but it's not a show stopper either.

I'm going to have to figure out which color bias I like better, so when the time comes, I'll be asking lots of questions.
