Has anyone used the new RRS Tripod Bags (external link) yet? I'm thinking about buying one, but want to see what folks think about it first.

Thanks!
Bryan

Beautiful, but do you have to pay $77 for it? Check bags like that at B&H.

I've thought about it, but I keep coming back to this one (which has gotten good reviews here). It's under $11.

I was told not to expect the new RRS bags until March. Have they started shipping earlier?

I have the current, soon-to-be-replaced model and I don't like it very much. They new design looks to correct all of the problems I have with the old one.

This is one the area where it seems RRS falls short with quality. The new model is the TQB-82 if I remember that correctly. Interested to see the updated version, but I am going to look at other options in the meantime since about to order the TVC-33.

Are the RRS bags padded? I will most likely opt for a padded one considering the set-up inside is well over 1k

Yes, they are padded and the new ones will be more-so.

Whichever way you go I'd recommend a quiver style tripod bag, just like the RRS ones. Manfrotto also makes a quiver bag that's worth investigating and is of a design that has seemed to inform many of the changes to the RRS design.

The new bag design looks to finally be worthy of RRS' tripods.

That one does look like a great bag, especially for the price. I have one for my Gitzo 3541 that's similar, but not as nice, and it's made by Promaster.

When I'm just hiking a mile or so, I tend to just take my 3541 and sling it over my shoulder (in the case) whereas if I'm hiking several miles, then I'll bust out my 1541 and use it. At any rate, when doing some casual hiking with my 3541, I'd like a well-designed case where I could easily pull out my tripod when I'm on the go...and the quiver design of the RRS bags appears to accommodate that.

But I quiver myself when thinking about paying $80+ for a tripod bag...

Bryan

James,

Would you mind sharing some of the shortcomings you've had with the previous design? Also, how do you think the new design will solve those problems?

Thanks!
Bryan

Sure. The short of the long is that the bag does not have an interior or exterior accessory pocket, no accommodation for an identification plate, and it does not have a top handle. The latter of which becomes an annoyance whenever you need to pick it up or put it down. If you use the shoulder strap to put it down you're left with an upside case on the floor. If you go and pick it up when it's right side up then you're left to grasp and pinch the zipper seam with nothing really to grab onto, as the bag will usually be resting on the shoulder strap. It's a dinky design.

All of these shortcomings have been addressed in the latest design on top of a more robust general fit and finish (which wasn't lacking in the first place).

Which size bag did you get...the medium or large?

Is there anything that you don't like about the bag? In your opinion, is it worth the premium price?

Thanks!
Bryan
