I have messed around with combining shots together in PS and I will admit I am a rookie at all things PS but what I have the toughest time with is getting the edge where an image from photo 1 meets with an object in photo 2 looking sharp/realistic.

Here is a sample that I was working on with/for a friend ...

The shot was first of the women, then a second of the empty room to catch the city lights outside. Note how "soft" the detail gets around the women when I try and draw in the city around them ? How do you get nice and sharp detailed edges when combining photos ?

What do your layers look like?
Background bottom with subjects masked above? You should be able to use refine mask on the mask if you have CS5.
If not, you'll need a harder brush along the perimeter.

Being a noob I am not even sure how to respond with the correct terms. I load both photos as layers and open a layer mask on the top layer with the girls then paint in the city in the windows around them, that what you are asking ?

I dont know what "refine mask" means so I will go look that up and see f thats what I am missing.

Thanks for the help, I wanna learn and improve.

First, I'd check PS Help for "refine edge" and "refine mask" to get a "big picture" of what's involved.

Then, you can check out the 'Net for tips and tutorials!

Go to www.photoshopuser.com/cs5 (external link) and click on the video called "Refine Selection Edges."
That explains it nicely.

Can you post the two original images?
