Hey POTN'ers. I got my Kacey Beauty Dish this week and have been doing some tests to get use to it. I'm reading that the proper way to use this is to have it pretty close to the subject (within 2-4 feet). With that the issue comes up where the dish is in my frame of view which definitely can't be right. So the question is, if you were shooting a person in the studio how would you position the dish in relation to the subject?

Depends on the look you want to achieve.

Obviously, you don't want it so close that it will be in the frame, but just outside the frame is pretty common/standard.

If you're not using it on a boom you're going to find it difficult to position it in a way where it or the stand aren't in frame, and limit its uses.

I've got a C-stand, so I can place it anywhere that it would need to go. I'm just not too sure how you would go about aiming this puppy to take head shots and portraits. I took some test shots yesterday and even after several adjustments to the placement of the dish and adjusting the strobe power I still ended up with hot spots on my subjects face....

Post some sample shots. I don't get any hot spots even when dish is like 6-7 feet away.

I did a search on the boards and on Google and apparently overlooked those pages. Thanks for linking these. I have a shoot this weekend and wanted to work out all the details on using this thing ahead of time, and I think that Youtube video gives me a good idea on how it's used.

As for posting a sample, I will check with my friend to see if he minds me posting it. Thanks for the help everyone!

All depends on look you going for. Typically you want to use it pretty close for face, head shots. For beauty shots it is hanging down from camera axis.

Any suggestions for the light stand and boom you use most often with your BD's? Looking for a budget deal...

Head shots is really what I'm trying to master. How close did you have it to the models face in the first picture? Was this a one light setup?

The first shot the dish is just oustide the frame on camera left. Only one light. The hair light is setting sun.

Is the dish on a boom or on a regular light stand?

What focal length were you shooting at? Sometimes narrowing the field of view by shooting at a longer focal length works.
