I get the feeling the AP is offering 'credit' for free pictures from fans using an i-phone in the stands. I can't imagine that was the best shot available from an actual working photographer at the game.

I mean....nobody competent managed to get a decent shot of Lebron James? Or was AP just not willing to pay for a shot?

It would be interesting to find out the rest of the story on this image. You wouldn't believe the number of times that an editor will choose the absolute worst image submitted for use if he feels it fits the story he wants to project.

The worst image I've ever had published ended up on the cover of a monthly magazine that covers high school sports. I was assigned to shoot bowling (worst lighting ever), shot plenty of reasonable shots, but the tourney organizers refused to tell my editor who the leaders were. I was shooting bowlers based on reputation but the editor ending up choosing a very weak image of a particular young lady who ended up with the best score from her school.

It was embarrassing.

Go figure.

Phil

Here's what the photo looked like before sportingnews cropped and edited it. My guess is that they resized it and saved it larger then the orignal or something.

The crop and resize definitely didn't help.

I've seen Jacquelyn's stuff in the Washington Times... usually news, portraits, and travel....

But it looks like she's covering more sports lately. Probably a lot of photo staff cutbacks.

Ha! I got asked to do this for this season. All you "What to do in a dark gym?" guys need to quit complaining about light. Try shooting in a bowling alley with dark walls, smoky grunge ceiling, scattered light fixtures with mix and match bulbs and....oh yeah, no flash allowed. And the hand moves almost as fast as volleyball.

As far as I know how AP operates in USA, it's not directly "shooting for AP". On this side of ocean (Europe) AP is just a regular photo/press agency, and they have their own shooters or stringers. On US side, things are different. They have "pool" of local shooters, who are shooting for their local newspapers, and these newspapers have deal with AP, so AP is forwarding their photos. So even if byline says AP, it doesn't mean AP shooter/stringer took that photo. It can be, but it can be also some kid shooting for local newspaper.
