Had some time to take a day off from playing ball, so I brought the camera and took some pictures. All were shot with a canon 50mm 1.8 (best indoor lighting lens my money has right now).

Missed focus on the first one. Try to get a little lower.

Don't be scared to go a little higher than ISO 800 on the 40D to get a little more shutter speed.

With gym lighting too, you'll find your pictures a lot more consistent if you set a manual WB and use manual exposure instead of Av... auto exposure is easily thrown off by cycling lights, light/dark jerseys, and signs/lights in the background.
